Mission Statement
The Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV) works to stop the cycle of domestic violence. We are a nonprofit network of 70+ domestic violence programs across the state. Together we improve how communities respond to abuse and work to create a social intolerance of abuse. We provide training and technical assistance, publish educational tools, engage the public, conduct research, and advocate for better laws.
About This Cause
Domestic violence is 100% preventable. However, the reality today is that one out of every three women in the United States will experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. DV is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women and children. In 2015, 68 people died at the hands of DV abusers in Washington State, shattering families and communities. Programs providing DV advocacy and emergency housing routinely turn away adults and their children because of lack of capacity. That is why WSCADV stands up every day for the basic rights and freedoms of life, liberty, safety, and respect. WSCADV is the leading voice for ending domestic violence in Washington. Our mission is to mobilize our member programs and allies to end domestic violence through advocacy and action for social change. We provide training to 2,500+ victim advocates annually, who return to their programs and provide quality direct service to thousands of survivors and families throughout Washington. We advocate for laws and public policy on behalf of survivors such as commonsense protections on abusers' access to firearms. We also lead exciting initiatives such as Domestic Violence Housing First and statewide violence prevention. Founded in 1990, WSCADV is recognized for visionary leadership, supporting our 70+ member programs, and educating the public. Our nationally recognized, innovative, evidence-based approaches get results: o Groundbreaking results from our Domestic Violence Housing First pilot, where survivors and their children can keep or quickly get into permanent housing, with flexible support for their safety. The model's startling success: 86% of clients had found and/or retained permanent housing one year after program entry; o Passage of a nationally-leading paid sick leave ordinance that includes “safety leave” so that survivors of sexual assault, DV, and stalking can seek help without getting fired; o A hard-won state law to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers with protection orders against them, following our work as the primary source for New York Times front-page coverage of gun law loopholes. Honors and recognition include: Sheila Wellstone Outstanding Organization Award, Seattle Mariners Fan of the Year (for our Refuse To Abuse® campaign), and the selection of our executive director as one of 15 people in the country included in the first cohort of a national initiative called Move to End Violence. Financial stewardship is important to WSCADV. Team leadership, strategic planning, and careful financial management have built a healthy organization. In fact, both the Nonprofit Finance Fund and CompassPoint Nonprofit Services have found WSCADV to be fiscally sound, exceptionally effective, and well-managed, with “well-executed services and programming.” Every dollar counts. Thanks for your support!
