Mission Statement

Tacoma Youth Chorus is an educational choral arts program for boys and girls (grades K-12). Our kids have a passion for singing that grows as they interact with audiences and one another through rehearsals, music sharings, concerts, and touring. For more than 25 years, TYC has inspired young singers through the joy of music; this joy and passion is carried into adulthood. Singers learn the values of respect and hard work and, in turn, inspire those around them. But more than anything, Tacoma Youth Chorus is a place for kids to have fun with music!

About This Cause

Mission Statement: Transforming the lives of youth through choral artistry and the ensemble experience. Tacoma Youth Chorus is comprised of six auditioned youth choirs and a preparatory music class for young children and is committed to the artistic development of musically-talented young people through disciplined vocal training and the performance of quality choral literature. Meeting after school weekly, September through June, each choir is designed to provide music education which prepares the child for advancement to the next level. Embracing Tacoma Youth Chorus's core values of respectful interactions, quality teaching, excellence in performance, musical integrity, rich learning and collaborative artistry, for more than 25 years, Tacoma Youth Chorus has inspired young people, families, and audiences alike. Performances are the singer's reward for the discipline and hard work during rehearsals. Serving more than 230 boys and girls, grades K-12, throughout the South Puget Sound region, Tacoma Youth Chorus hosts 5-6 major concerts each year and collaborates with musicians who are experts in their fields, including Symphony Tacoma, Symphony Tacoma Voices, Northwest Sinfonietta, Northwest Repertory Singers, and Tacoma Opera, noted composers and choral educators. Tacoma Youth Chorus was founded in 1991 by Judith Herrington, its Artistic Director. A graduate of the University of Oregon, Ms. Herrington earned her Master of Education degree from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, and brings more than 35 years of teaching and conducting experience to her work at Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma, Washington, where she was recipient of the Inspirational Faculty Award and Murray Foundation Chair for Teaching Excellence. Having served in several leadership positions for the WA-American Choral Directors Association Board, she is the 2011 recipient of its Leadership and Service Award. She is an inaugural member of the School of Arts and Communication Advisory Board at Pacific Lutheran University. Ms. Herrington is highly regarded as a guest conductor, workshop and choral clinician, and served as visiting faculty at VanderCook College of Music. She was inducted into the Washington State Music Educators Association Hall of Fame in February 2016. A noted composer and arranger, she has published through Pavane Publishing, Hal Leonard Publishing, and Colla Voce Publishing. She also edits two choral series for Pavane Publishing. Tacoma Youth Chorus has a robust scholarship program, and in its 26-year history has never turned away a singer for financial reasons. Tacoma Youth Chorus has also participated in multiple invitational music festivals and international tours. Tacoma Youth Chorus in the words of others: "It's easy to give back to Tacoma Youth Chorus when we've received so much. The successes my kids have today, I believe are a direct result of their TYC experiences: Respect, discipline, confidence, professionalism, and travel." C. Martin, TYC Parent and Board Member "Thank you for doing the exceptional, not in just the music but in the lives of your members." E. Pitts, TYC Alum 2014 "Tacoma Youth Chorus provides a place for young singers where passion for music and precision in music come together in the beautiful, moving, and inspiring performance of music." J. Kangas, Music Educator/School Administrator "Being in TYC taught me the value of commitment, responsibility, accountability, artistry, work ethic, confidence, and most importantly, success. I can say that feeling successful as a young singer in TYC was one of the best feelings I have ever experienced. It inspired me to learn how to give that feeling to others. I am now a choral director, teaching music to six choirs every day at the middle and high school level. I wouldn't be where I am now, personally or professionally, without the wonderful experience given to me in Tacoma Youth Chorus." K. Eck, TYC Alum 2008, and Music Educator "I value TYC because it is an amazing organization that allows me to express my passion for music and make lasting friendships along the way -- thank you!" TYC singer, age 16 "I like TYC because I enjoy letting my singing fill my heart with joy." TYC singer, age 8
