Mission Statement

Mission: We are part of the nation's leading dropout prevention organization, working in public schools to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

About This Cause

Vision: We envision a future rooted in educational equity in which every young person in Washington State has the resources and community support needed to thrive. Our Network Commitment to Educational Equity Children and youth deserve a caring community that empowers them to achieve their goals in the classroom and beyond. To do so, racism and other inequalities in our educational system and society must be acknowledged and address. The Communities In Schools of Washington (CISWA) network exists to build on student strengths and overcome systemic barriers through advocacy, partnership, and individual social-emotional supports. What we do: Nearly one in four students fails to graduate on time in Washington. Communities In Schools offers a solution to the dropout problem. In partnership with public schools facing the greatest dropout challenges, Communities In Schools brings resources and volunteers into the school to help struggling students get back on track. Many of the young people we serve are facing challenges both inside and outside the classroom. What sets Communities In Schools apart is the way we coordinate a comprehensive range of services to support all the needs of these students—academic and non-academic—so they come to school ready to learn. The model we use to provide these services places a Communities In Schools site coordinator in a school to assess needs, make a plan, and coordinate intensive interventions for the kids most at risk for dropping out, along with services geared to the entire school. The site coordinator works with local community service partners such as social service agencies, businesses, health care providers and volunteers to connect students with needed resources. Our goal is simple. Put students at the center. Surround them with a caring community of support. And create access to critical resources, like food, housing, healthcare, counseling and remote technologies so they can take charge of the future they want for themselves, their communities, and each other. Across the state, site coordinators provide individualized supports to 6,204 students. Of the 1,096,695 students enrolled in Washington State Public Schools, 10% (107,854) are supported through the Communities In Schools of Washington Network. Now more than ever, we must reimagine public education and find new ways to create equitable conditions for learning for ALL students, with students at the center, surrounded by a caring community with access to all necessary resources.
