Mission Statement
Guided by the fact that literacy is essential to lifelong success, Page Ahead provides new books and develops reading activities that empower at-risk children. Developing strong reading skills is the most important step on a child's educational journey: a child who is not reading proficiently at the end of third grade is FOUR times more likely to drop-out of school before graduating than one who is. In Washington, 45% of children are not reading proficiently when they finish 3rd grade. For children living in poverty, that figure rises to more than 61%. Page Ahead works to break down barriers to achievement for children in need, and is committed to help all children become successful readers.
About This Cause
Page Ahead serves children, families and communities - with new books for children; literacy support for families; and reading resources for communities. Since 1990, Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program has given more than four million new books to more than one million children through collaborations with schools, social service agencies, preschools, and early childhood programs across Washington. Through our programs, we work to erase the early reading gap for children in communities of concentrated low income before it becomes an “achievement” gap. Page Ahead has grown from a King County book giveaway project to the leading provider of children’s books and literacy services in the state, currently serving more than 26,000 students in eighteen counties, and our work has attracted attention nationwide: Page Ahead is a top-ranked early childhood education program on Charity Navigator, and we were recognized with a State Literacy Award by the Library of Congress in 2021. Page Ahead’s programs 1. Book Up Summer: K–2 students receive twelve free brand-new books of their choice at the end of the school year for three years in a row, building home libraries, minimizing or eliminating the “summer reading slump,” and helping them return to school in the fall ready to learn. 2. Story Leaders: Preschool teachers learn specific shared reading techniques to help students actively participate in reading, which builds the students’ vocabulary and early reading skills; students receive eight books to take home, building their home libraries and reinforcing the home–school connection. 3. Story Time: Trained volunteers bring reading fun and inspiration to preschool and kindergarten children in classrooms in the Puget Sound area and Spokane. 4. Book Oasis: Little Free Libraries installed, maintained, and refilled by Page Ahead in “book desert” neighborhoods help make it easier for children to access new reading material. Page Ahead is an effective and cost-efficient solution endorsed by educators across Washington State.
