Mission Statement

NAMI Washington supports the work of 19 local NAMI affiliates in communities large and small around the state. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for all those affected by mental illness. We do this by providing a statewide, unifying voice of advocacy and coordinating the delivery of education, support and recovery.

About This Cause

NAMI Washington’s active Public Policy Committee monitors our state’s mental health and health policy issues in Olympia, develops public policy information and position statements, and publishes our Public Policy Priorities. The annual mid-January NAMI Day in Olympia brings our members from across the state to the Capitol, where they gather to lobby their legislators about mental illness and the fact that recovery is possible. NAMI Washington trains local affiliate volunteers to teach or lead NAMI’s free life changing signature programs in their communities. These programs include: •Family-to-Family Education Class, an 8-week program for families and caregivers who may be traumatized or confused by their loved one’s mental illness symptoms. •Peer to Peer, a unique, experiential learning program for people with any serious mental illness who are interested in establishing and maintaining their wellness and recovery. •Basics, a six-session class for families and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illness. •In Our Own Voice, presentations by trained individuals who are recovering from mental illness. These personal stories put a face to mental illness and help to reduce stigma. •Ending the Silence, is a 50-minute presentation about mental health conditions in youth. Available for 3 audiences: students, families, and school staff. All versions educate about warning signs, what to do, and the importance of early intervention. •NAMI Washington also presents an annual educational conference for family members and persons living with mental illness, as well as community service providers. You can read more about these programs on our website at https://www.namiwa.org/. NAMI Washington also trains those who lead NAMI support groups at local affiliates, including: •NAMI Connection, a weekly recovery support group for people living with mental illness in which people learn from each others’ experiences, share coping strategies, and offer each other encouragement and understanding. •Family Support Groups, which meet once a month for family members and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness. NAMI Washington is the designated National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) partner for the state of Washington. We disseminate NIMH research information via presentations, brochures and booklets to legislators, family members, professionals and those living with mental illness.
