Mission Statement

Hugo House is a place for writers: a place to read words, hear words, and make your own words better.

About This Cause

Hugo House is a place to read words, hear words, and make your own words better. Our purpose in fulfilling that mission is to first and foremost be a place for writers. Our strategy is to provide the best services, events, and programs possible to writers, in short, to help them write better. For us, it’s not enough that words are put on the page, we want to give writers the tools and inspiration they need to make those words the very best that they can be. The ways we achieve this goal are many. Every year, thousands of people walk through our doors to hear readings by notable national and regional writers, thousands more enroll in one or two or several of our 200+ writing classes, several hundred kids participate in our youth programs for promising teenage writers. We foster writers on the verge of their career in our Made at Hugo House fellowship program, and give more established writers the chance to engage with the public as civic literary leaders as a Writer in Residence. We commission new work, provide opportunities for collaboration, produce thought-provoking events that explore the depths and details of the writing craft. Our role in shaping and stewarding the literary arts on a national level is as varied as the faces that show up in our classrooms, audiences, and at our lecterns. Writing, as our namesake Richard Hugo wrote, is hard work, a challenge that takes humility, honesty, and the courage to go deep enough to discover and reveal our common humanity. For anyone who takes on that challenge, Hugo House is that writer’s greatest ally. Founded in 1996, Hugo House is located in the vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington.
