About This Cause

AVANCE-Houston is a non-profit organization that creates a brighter future for low-income families in Houston and surrounding areas. Its mission is to break the cycles of generational trauma and poverty by providing access to family education and financial literacy and creating economic mobility. Through the Parent-Child Education (PCEP), early childhood education, and Adult Education Programs, AVANCE-Houston aims to empower families with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve economic mobility and improve their overall quality of life. Our holistic approach recognizes that education benefits the individual, their families, and the community as a whole. By investing in early childhood, family education, and financial literacy, AVANCE-Houston is positively impacting the lives of many and helping to build a stronger, more resilient community. Description of Programs: • Parent and Child Education Program(PCEP) is a two-generation parenting and early childhood education program. It is a nationally recognized intervention that empowers parents to become an integral part of their child’s education and development. This is a two-generation model in its truest form. Parents and infants under the age of 3, attend classes simultaneously. Parents learn their responsibilities and their children’s educational needs. PCEP has received high certification ratings for its evidence base in California and Texas. • Adult Education utilizes a state-approved curriculum, providing instruction in mathematics, reading, and writing. Students can start from Adult Basic Education (ABE) levels and transition to and earn their GED a high school equivalency certificate. We promote a college-bound culture and pathways to economic growth. Students graduate from ABE and into the GED certificate track. With support from United Way, the program also offers financial stability classes and coaching along with childcare to support parents in their pursuit of education, vocational training, or education. Parents gain confidence to enroll in post-secondary institutions and skills training programs, receive college and workforce orientation, and set career goals. They can also earn a child development certificate from AVANCE. In addition, students have the opportunity to receive technology skills training through the program's igniting pathways modules. • Early Head Start( EHS) is a community-based program for families including expectant moms, infants, and toddlers up to the age of three. EHS programs provide intensive comprehensive child education and development and family support services. AVANCE works with the family to ensure health and medical needs are met, as well as nutrition, and coaches them on how to access all necessary services. • Head Start (HS) offers licensed and accredited preschool programs for low-income children ages 3-5. By partnering with local school districts, we serve low-income neighborhoods most in need. We operate centers within school facilities and free-standing centers. We also subcontract operations with a local United Way agency, a private for-profit center, and Aldine Independent School District. One of our centers meets the highest standard for quality and is recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). All our centers and affiliated centers are licensed by the State. Our goal is to ensure that all children are kindergarten ready when they enter school and parents understand their role and responsibility in supporting their children. • Healthy Relationships (Adults): Family Relationship and Marriage Education Works (FRAMEWorks) serves adult couples over the age of 18. We work with multiple cohorts to strengthen marital relationships and improve economic stability for the well-being of the parents and their children. The goal is to create strong and healthy relationships in our community. We utilize a three-pronged approach to mitigate negative outcomes through 1) a trauma-informed approach to support mental health, improve communication skills, and self-efficacy, 2) strengthened communication and self-advocacy skills, and 3) access to education, job training, and other needed resources. • Healthy Relationships (Youth): Relationships, Education, Advancement, and Development for Youth for Life (Ready4Life) develops relationship skills for at-risk youth 14-18 years of age by relying on assigned cohorts in high schools. We create pathways to successful transitions to adulthood. Our curriculum covers healthy marriage and relationship education, parenting skills, and career advancement.
