Mission Statement
River City Food Bank is the oldest, continuously serving food bank in Sacramento and the only Sacramento-area food bank open every week day to anyone experiencing hunger from anywhere in Sacramento County…
About This Cause
History Over 40 years feeding neighbors who are hungry Created by the community for the community, River City Food Bank began in 1968 as River City Community Services. The philosophy then, as now, was simple: “No one should be hungry.” Originally located at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in downtown Sacramento, in 1981 the program moved to 1322 27th Street. On October 21, 2010, one of a string of arson fires destroyed the building. However, with community support, the food bank continued to serve first out of Trinity Cathedral and then relocated across the street in temporary retail space provided by Sutter Medical Center. By May 2011, enough funds were raised to purchase a new building located at 1800 28th Street, Sacramento. River City Food Bank is a 501.c.3 organization. Our people Volunteers continue to be at the heart of what we do, providing over 11,000 hours of labor and love each year. Our full time staff – the executive director, administrative assistant, program director and Food Stamp Outreach Coordinator – ensure the integrity and strength of our operations, along with the diligent support of our Board of Directors. Please join us as a volunteer or supporter and help make a positive impact in the lives of families in need. How we help • Clients who meet income guidelines receive a three-day emergency food supply up to once a month so that they can avoid skipping meals or cutting the nutritional value of what they eat. • RCFB is the rare Sacramento food outreach program that provides nutritional counseling in addition to food supplies. Nutrition education programs help clients improve food quality (by shopping better) and food resource management (by increasing the number of healthy meals that can be created from the same supply). • RCFB helps people work toward self-reliance by providing a short term food supply when they are unable to meet basic living expenses like rent, utility bills, medical care and transportation costs and ensure adequate access to food. • RCFB also helps clients avoid a downward spiral that can begin when they can’t pay bills or afford transportation to get to work. How we operate • RCFB takes donated and surplus food and purchases important staples, like peanut butter, tuna, eggs, and dairy products, on a bulk basis. The cost of those basics has risen rapidly over the past two years. • Clients go through an intake process that confirms their income qualifies them for aid. It also limits use of the food closet to once a month, and determines any special dietary requirements or limitations on their food preparation abilities. • Hundreds of committed volunteers donate over 11,000 hours of service stocking shelves, providing three-day food supplies, while offering hope and compassion. • Funding for the organization comes almost entirely from donations. Most donations come from individuals who open up their hearts and wallets. Entering a fifth decade of service, River City Food Bank has grown into a trusted community resource. We are an ecumenical nonprofit open to all residents of Sacramento County five days a week. Contributions from generous individuals, businesses, the faith community, private foundations and a stellar team of weekly volunteers support our work. Because no one should be hungry.
