Mission Statement

The primary purpose of this club is to improve the quality of life for children and families worldwide by adhering to the Objects of Kiwanis International, which are: - To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life. - To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. - To promote the adoption and application of higher social, business, and professional standards. - To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship. - To provide, through this club, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build a better community. - To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

About This Cause

The West San Jose Kiwanis Club is in Division 12 of the Cal-Nev-Ha district of Kiwanis International. in part owes its' origin to the phenomenal growth and business expansion of San Jose. Community members, and local business and professional men and women of the area have joined together, beginning in 1955, forming the Kiwanis Club of West San Jose and have become dedicated Kiwanis members working to improve the quality of life for children and families worldwide. We meet each Thursday morning at Denny's restaurant, 1140 Hillsdale Avenue in San Jose, starting promptly at 7:15AM and ending at 8:30AM. Each meeting includes breakfast, updates on Club's community service and fundraising projects, and a short program from guest speakers around the community. There is no charge for visitors and no reservations are necessary. If you wish to see what we do please look over our current projects, or just drop by for breakfast! Our current community service projects include: - Boys & Girls Club weekly tutoring elementary school students, - Brown Bag Food Delivery bi-monthly to blind, and elderly/disabled persons, - Loaves & Fishes food service event to seniors, and homeless persons three times per month - Kiwanis Turnaround Scholarships program in which our club awards annually $25-30,000 to graduating and continuing college/trade school students who overcame obstacles in their personal lives and living conditions, as part of a group of Kiwanis Clubs in the area which awards a total of over $250,000 annually. - Our City Forest City of San Jose based program assist monthly in planting trees citywide, and help at nursery. - Kiwanis Annual Special Games at West Valley College specially designed events for over 1000 severally disabled high school students and our Club helps in providing some of the volunteers along with other Kiwanis Clubs, College Circle K clubs, and high school Key Clubs in the Santa Clara County area. - Kohl's Shopping Spree for clothing for low income students attending Luther Burbank K-8 School District - Salvation Army Emanuel House food service event to seniors, and homeless persons twice per month - Burbank Food Pantry monthly bag and distribute produce to those in need. - Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley Spring and Fall Saturday provide volunteer for workdays. Projects are focused on seniors and handicapped to allow them to stay safely in their homes as they age, and perform needed maintenance and upkeep type work their residences. - Key Club High school leadership programs at Lincoln, Del Mar, and Harker High Schools - Builders Club grades 6th to 8th grade student leadership program at Luther Burbank School District - Employer School Council (ESC) support of fundraising events, and donation of $10,000 annually towards graduating and continuing college/trade school students from SCUSD Wilson High School (Alternative Ed), and New Valley High School (Continuation Ed) - Kiwanis One Day annual community service event involving multiple Kiwanis clubs in area, as part of an international Kiwanis community service Day - Book Aloud reading literacy program at San Jose libraries reading to children - Tower Foundation Annual $5,000 scholarship for grant to graduate student for project work on Big Basin/Henry Cowell Redwoods preservation - Key Club leadership scholarships annually available for leadership excellence - Other Annual Donations to support local organizations include Second Harvest Food Bank, Family Giving Tree, Via Services (Disabled Students Campground Facility Maintenance and Repairs), Bill Wilson Center, Books Aloud, Know-a-Vet, Community for Green Foothills, Rebuilding Together, Salvation Army, College of Adaptive Arts, Kiwanis Family House, Our City Forest, Kiwanis Children's Fund, Sacred Heart, Kiwanis Special Games, and Boys & Girls Club.  - Fundraising projects to support various our Community, Youth, Scholarship and Leadership programs. Major fundraising events include holding a New Year's Day 5k/10k Resolution Run on the trails at Shoreline Park in Mountain View, co-sponsoring and staffing the annual K-Bell Classic Track meet involving 1500 athletes, attending and selling tickets for annual Kiwanis Turnaround Scholarship Benefit, and assisting County with management and collection of Federal/State/County/City election ballots. - Raising funds and donations for Kiwanis International health programs including eliminating iodine deficiency worldwide, and the Eliminate program to reduce maternal/neonatal tetanus in infants Social Activities - Social activities for members and family, include Christmas Season Holiday Party, Santa Clara Melodrama Show and Chinese Food dinner, Mystery Trip, Family BBQ and President's Pre-Installation Reception. Mission: Give primacy to the club's social side of life - Creation of life long friendships with fellow Kiwanis members and their families who share your passion and work hand in hand doing community service and helping others.
