Mission Statement
Our mission is to protect and restore healthy rivers and streams across Washington so that fish, farms and communities can thrive for generations.
About This Cause
Often thought of as a water-rich state, many of WA’s rivers and streams suffer from low stream flows during the summer months. Some streams have disappeared entirely, running completely dry. This is detrimental to our beloved and culturally important salmon, steelhead and trout populations that rely on abundant, cool, clean water for healthy habitat, and also diminishes the recreational, aesthetic, and spiritual qualities of our rivers & streams. These low stream flows are a result of a long legacy of excessive out-of-stream water use, rapidly growing populations, and degraded natural water storage features such as forests, floodplains and wetlands. And now climate change is making the situation worse and threatening our freshwater like never before as seen through recent record-breaking temperatures and drought. There is an urgent need to restore our freshwater to build resiliency for our fish and our communities here in Washington. By donating to Washington Water Trust, you are helping to fix 150+ years of freshwater overuse and inefficiency in many watersheds across the state from the San Juans and the Olympic Peninsula to Walla Walla; your support puts water back instream and protects it there so that our rivers, streams and fish will be more resilient and able to persist into a future that is not expected to be particularly kind to them. Washington's freshwater belongs to all the people of Washington. You can make a difference in restoring and protecting the magnificent rivers and streams that make Washington such a beautiful place to live and play.
