Mission Statement
Transitioning from a service year can be a disorienting experience. Through mentoring, a colleague community and re-integration services, the Krista Foundation helps young adults fully understand and employ the learnings from their service experience. A service year, when nurtured, becomes a life of service leadership.
About This Cause
The Krista Foundation for Global Citizenship serves young adults in their 20’s who have chosen to do a year of local or global service. We play a role that placement organizations themselves are not always able to do: that of supporting the young adult after their service experience as they figure out what it means to their lives and faith. Volunteer or vocational service can be life changing but it is often difficult to integrate new perspectives and practices into a life beyond the service experience. The Krista Foundation equips young adults to leverage these experiences into a life-long ethic of service, civic engagement, and global understanding. We do this through a colleague community, mentoring, leadership and intercultural training, transition and debriefing services. The Krista Foundation believes a service year, when nurtured, becomes a life of service leadership. The Krista Foundation for Global Citizenship is an ecumenical Christian organization intentionally bridging theological and ideological divides. Understanding that service entails more than good intentions, the Krista Foundation encourages healthy service ethics on behalf of the volunteer and the communities they serve with and learn from. Each year, through a nomination and interview process, the Krista Colleague Cohort Program selects 15-17 outstanding young leaders who are serving with a variety of organizations such as AmeriCorps, Jesuit Volunteer Corps, Peace Corps or Lutheran Volunteer Corps. The Krista Foundation augments the good work of other organizations, providing additional training and mentoring during and for several years after. Now in its 13th year, there are more than 200 Krista Colleagues and the Krista Foundation’s distinctive model and service resources are gaining national recognition. Universities and service organizations find The Global Citizen resource and the innovative pre and post-service programs, immensely valuable for engaging young adults in life-shaping cross-cultural learning, both in the US and abroad. The Krista Foundation for Global Citizenship was founded in memory of Krista Hunt Ausland who died in 1998 while doing long term volunteer work in Bolivia. The organization fosters and celebrates her spirit of active love and faith in a new generation of leaders.
