Mission Statement

Unique Woman’s Coalition (UWC) is dedicated to being a collective voice centering the narratives and needs of Black trans culture. We're committed to fostering the next generation of Black trans leadership from within the community through mentorship and community care engagement work.

About This Cause

Founded in 1997, Unique Woman’s Coalition (UWC) is the oldest Black trans-led organization in Southern California, dedicated to uplifting, advocating for, and centering the voices of Black trans individuals. With a legacy spanning over two decades, UWC stands as a beacon of resilience, empowerment, and transformative leadership within the transgender community. What began as a simple gathering for Thanksgiving dinner among Black trans women has flourished into a fully operational and nationally recognized trans-led organization. Over the years, UWC has expanded its impact through a wide range of programs and initiatives designed to address critical needs, including professional development, legal advocacy, health education, and cultural awareness. UWC operates from the Connie Norman Transgender Empowerment Center, a collaborative space that serves as a cultural epicenter for trans-led organizations. Through strategic partnerships and unwavering community dedication, UWC has pioneered initiatives that provide holistic support, leadership development, and advocacy training for Black trans individuals. UWC’s programs are built for the community, by the community, addressing social, economic, and healthcare disparities while fostering personal and professional growth. Some of our most impactful initiatives include: The TEA Program (Trans Equity & Advocacy): Training Black trans ambassadors to assist with legal document changes, connect trans individuals to healthcare coverage, and educate providers on cultural competency. TransGiving Dinner: A community-centered holiday celebration that provides food, resources, and fellowship. Our HONORS Awards: A recognition ceremony that celebrates the achievements and contributions of Black trans leaders and allies. Trans Pride LA & Civic Engagement: Hosting one of the first trans-led polling places in Los Angeles County, ensuring Black trans voices are represented in civic processes. SWLEARN Project: A collaborative initiative that offers workshops on health, safety, and resilience for Black trans women with sex work experience. Pulse Survey & Needs Assessment: Gathering critical data to assess and respond to the evolving needs of the Black trans community. Community Wellness Retreats & Leadership Development: Supporting UWC Ambassadors through wellness-focused events that realign them with UWC’s mission and prepare them for leadership roles. Looking Ahead As we continue to build on our 25+ year legacy, UWC remains steadfast in its vision for a future where Black trans individuals thrive without barriers. Through advocacy, mentorship, and leadership development, we are not only fostering change within our community but also shaping the next generation of Black trans leadership. Our work is not just about today—it’s about ensuring that the voices of Black trans individuals remain at the forefront of progress, equity, and social justice for generations to come. At UWC, it’s never just about one—it’s about all of us.
