Mission Statement

Rainier Scholars serves motivated and hard-working low-income students of color who will be the first in their family to earn a college degree. Our program combines rigorous academics and leadership development with personalized support for scholars and families from 5th grade through college graduation. We are committed to eliminating barriers to educational opportunities and growing new generations of diverse college graduates, career professionals and community leaders.

About This Cause

The 12-year Rainier Scholars program is divided into four distinct phases (with an additional alumni affairs component) serving over 750 students with the following services: Academic Enrichment Phase (AEP) - Often called academic boot camp, a cohort of fifth graders participates in rigorous academic coursework over a 14-month period in addition to regular school classes. Instructional hours are the equivalent of an entire school year. Subjects include Literature/Writing, History, Science, Math and Global Studies. Outcomes include developing skills for academic success and placement into college preparatory educational settings in public and private schools. 60-65 students are served per year in the cohort model. Middle School Support (MSS) - Students attend both highly capable public school and private school programs, and are supported through middle and high school with academic counselor visits at school sites, social and cultural activities, weekly tutoring opportunities, skill-building workshops and annual retreats. Outcomes include increasing skills for academic success, college readiness and high school placement in college track programs in public and private schools. A minimum of 7 academic counselor visits occur per year with 3-5 additional social activities in which personalized support is offered for approximately 125-150 students. High School Support (HSS) - Students in high school receive additional enhanced services through five leadership development retreats, summer internship opportunities and career exploration. Students participate with intensive customized college counseling, SAT prep activities and in-depth financial aid/college planning services. Outcomes include increased skills for leadership roles and workplace success, mastering skills for college success as well as 100% high school graduation and college admission. This phase serves approximately 175 students each year. College Support (CS) – Students receive ongoing support services throughout their college years including a “College 101” retreat, annual workshops and social gatherings, ongoing support and advocacy with academics and finances. Summer internships and professional networking opportunities are provided. Outcomes include engagement in campus leadership activities, career planning and projected college graduation for 90% of scholars in a five year timeframe. 175 students served per year. Alumni Services - Designed to support young graduates in areas of professional development, networking and mentoring, community engagement activities and leadership roles as well as building support for our organization from our alumni base. Currently serving nearly 185 college graduates.
