About This Cause

While accompanying her farmworker parents to Oregon in 1975, six-year-old Virginia Garcia acquired a simple foot wound, and when economic and linguistic barriers prevented her from receiving the care she needed, it led to her untimely death. Stunned by this tragedy, community leaders joined together to form Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center in a three-car garage in Cornelius, Oregon. Since its founding 49 years ago, Virginia Garcia has grown from a grassroots volunteer-run clinic into a full service health care home serving Washington and Yamhill Counties. Today, Virginia Garcia employs over 600 people and serves more than 52,000 patients at five primary care clinics, six dental clinics, five school-based health centers, a reproductive health clinic in Hillsboro, and mobile outreach clinics.
