About This Cause

PugetBrass is a British-style brass band in the Pacific Northwest modeled after the brass bands that originated in Great Britain during the mid-1800s. We are proud to closely follow the traditional brass band tradition, incorporating British marches, original brass band works as well as arrangements of classical, pop and jazz genres originating from all parts of the western world. This extensive variety of styles makes British brass band music appealing to a wide audience. Our band has played music ranging from lighter, traditional arrangements of Danny Boy and Floral Dance, to great works like Second Suite in F and The Planets by Gustav Holst. Other selections include Salvation Army arrangements, such as Edward Gregson’s Variations on Laudate Dominum and large, programmatic pieces by Paul Lovatt-Cooper, such as The Dark Side of the Moon and Walking with Heroes. Additional examples include musical transcriptions of works by Andrew Lloyd Webber such as Pie Jesu and selections from Les Misérables. Formed in 2000, PugetBrass consists of roughly thirty brass and percussion players. The brass sections consist of almost exclusively conical bore instruments (cornets, tenor horns, flugelhorn, euphoniums and tubas) but also include baritones and trombones, which have straight, cylindrical-shaped tubing. Our mission is to bring high quality brass band music to the area to enrich the community's cultural experience. We like to remind audiences that making music can be a life-long activity that does not have to stop upon graduation from high school or college! Our membership is made up of people from many professions: engineers, teachers, truck drivers, music educators, full-time parents, and retirees. Members of the band hail from the United States, Scotland and Germany. PugetBrass performs regularly in the greater Seattle area as well as traveling to locations such as Whidbey Island, Tacoma and Olympia. The band was honored to perform at the 2014 Washington Music Educators Association state conference held in Yakima, Washington. PugetBrass’ future plans include participating in the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA) Competition.
