Mission Statement
The Alaska SeaLife Center generates and shares scientific knowledge to promote understanding and stewardship of Alaska's marine ecosystems. While primarily dedicated to marine research and education, the Center is the only permanent facility permitted to rescue and rehabilitate marine mammals and birds, and is the only public aquarium in the state of Alaska.
About This Cause
The Alaska SeaLife Center generates and shares scientific knowledge to promote understanding and stewardship of Alaska’s marine ecosystems. The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) works toward fulfilling our mission through three basic areas – Science, Education and Wildlife Response. Each is an integral component in our overall mission and day-to-day work. Education Program The main goal of the ASLC’s Education Program is to foster ocean literacy and stewardship by connecting people of all ages to Alaska’s marine ecosystems in meaningful ways. We accomplish this by: • Making marine science relevant and accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. • Creating programs which demonstrate that the oceans and humans are inextricably interconnected. • Highlighting the relevance of Alaska’s ecosystems to both Alaskan and non-Alaskan audiences. • Installing engaging and relevant exhibits throughout our public aquarium. • Offering a variety of learning opportunities through visitor experiences, interpretation, in-house programs, distance learning, outreach, and multimedia products. • Providing teachers with curriculum and training opportunities specific to Alaskan marine ecosystems and local research projects. • Working with state and national peers to stay up-to-date on best practices in information science communications, as well as offering professional training to peer groups. Science Program The main goal of the Science Program is to develop an understanding of the role of marine mammals, birds and fish in arctic/subarctic marine ecosystems and to generate scientific knowledge relevant to resource management and policy. The ASLC’s unique geographic location, marine cold water research facilities, live animal collections and specialized staff allows us to use a combination of captive and field research to: • Investigate physiological and ecological processes affecting marine animal population dynamics. • Conduct controlled experiments to understand factors affecting reproductive success and fitness in marine species. • Monitor marine animal responses to environmental variability and stressors. • Evaluate human impacts on our marine environment and animal populations. • Develop tools to support recovery and restoration of marine resources. Wildlife Response Program The main goal of this program is to learn from live and dead stranded animals to better understand wild populations and maintain capacity to respond to natural or manmade disasters. We accomplish this by: • Screening for conditions of concern. • Determining the health of individual animals. • Providing humane animal care. • Training staff and partners for response. • When possible, returning healthy animals to the wild.
