Mission Statement
Contributions that we receive will go directly to supporting the publications of deserving literary works by authors that for one reason or another would be unlikely to find a home in the for-profit publishing sector. Like a traditional publishing company, we focus on quality. Our authors and their books are vetted by Aristata Press volunteer readers, who are themselves authors and publishers, and the submitted works must fit the goals of the Aristata Press imprint. We are interested in original narrative non-fiction, fiction, and poetry, and in stories about and by people from all walks of life. Unlike a traditional publishing company, Aristata Press retains no rights to our authors’ writings. When we develop a contract with an author, it will clearly state that the author retains all rights. For example, if an author’s book is very successful, and someone wants to make a movie, the author will reap all of the benefits from the sale of those rights. Likewise, the author benefits from any other publishing associated rights—first rights, digital publication, audiobook, etc. Quite simply, Aristata Press founders conceived of a press where the authors have control over their art and earn any money to be gained. Unlike a traditional publisher, vanity, or a hybrid publisher, Aristata Press retains zero percent of authors’ royalties. We think of ourselves as publishing catalysts. We want people who have good words to share to be able to share them regardless of advanced age, disability status, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion. We are not afraid to publish a first-time or a last-time, or a first and last-time author, because we are interested in the art of writing, not the commercial viability.
About This Cause
As a non-profit organization, we depend on charitable contributions and volunteers to keep the lights on. All charitable contributions are used to defray the typical costs associated with publishing--editing, book exterior and interior design, typesetting, printing and distribution, and marketing. We run a lean operation with only two full-time, unpaid publishers. We currently have twelve other unpaid members of our community who volunteer time as readers.
