About This Cause
vildwerk. was founded in September 2022 with a mission of providing environmental conservation awareness through dance. Our goal is to help protect and preserve this beautiful planet by inspiring and educating to save, rewild and restore biodiversity locally and globally. Based in New York City, vildwerk. is the only dance organization solely dedicated to becoming the consistent voice in the performing arts world to convey the work of global conservation organizations to an audience on stage at a level of highest artistry, something that is currently absent in this format. The translation of the Dutch and Swedish word vildwerk is ‘wild work’ – a wild work of art. The only way that vildwerk.’s mission can truly be fulfilled, will be to present a multitude of events throughout the year and to engage in community education projects. The wonderful diversity of today’s dance field offers the perfect platform to tell stories of our wild and multifaceted planet and vildwerk. will present an annual performed medley of works on stage by various choreographers in collaboration with leading environmental conservationists. Celebrating the beauty and diversity of this fragile planet the audience will be emotionally inspired to help protect earth and support conservation organizations in their efforts to save our planet. Each work will have a different theme, be it oceans, jungles or the stories of individual animals threatened with extinction reminding us that we are all connected. Artists will partner with wildlife NGOs and experts, collaborating and help develop the subject content of each piece. Through knowledge passed directly to the artist by the conservationist, a unique study of the subject matter will be created, merging conservation awareness with artistic beauty and expression, not only during the creation phase, but also when performing the work and, ultimately, this emotion will be received by the viewer. The collaborating organization will also be able to support the artists by assisting with providing material for set designs, such as original location/wildlife film footage. Further in 2024, vildwerk. will take part in an additional artistic projects, Dancing for the Amazon. This specific project will raise awareness of the many challenges the lungs of our planet are facing. It is a collaboration with Nature and Culture International, various local Latin American NGOs and dancer Fernando Montano where performances will be live streamed from New York City and several Latin American countries, including Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela and Mexico. Works will all have Amazon related themes, and we are looking to work with an Indigenous Venezuelan tribe in an artistic exchange that will be introduced to us. Dancing for the Amazon will give rise to the wonderful possibilities of workshops and other educational events with the diverse communities of New York City and beyond.
