Mission Statement

The Mayor’s Fund for Las Vegas LIFE (Mayor's Fund) was established in 2017 by Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman and the Las Vegas City Council to serve as a catalyst for positive change. The Fund’s multifaceted approach aims to address and overcome the most pervasive and complex challenges facing the Las Vegas community. The Mayor’s Fund serves as a vehicle for corporate and philanthropic partners to support programs and initiatives that improve quality of life for all Las Vegas residents with a special focus on vulnerable and underserved populations in the areas of education, workforce development, public arts, youth sports and development, and technology. The Mayor’s Fund creates opportunities for public-private partnerships via collaboration of resources, donations of cash, time and in-kind goods and services, as well as innovative ideas for solving critical challenges. Governed by a diverse group of community leaders, the Mayor’s Fund strives to actualize unique solutions by means of community collaboration, proving the impact of joining mission-based forces to create positive change in our community.

About This Cause

As a 501(c)(3) organization, the Mayor's Fund serves as a partnership architect, bridging gap between the desire of private industry to help the community populations, and the City of Las Vegas's efforts to maintain and manage programs that will enhance the lives of our residents. In most cases, these are the most vulnerable and underserved residents in our community. The Mayor's Fund focuses on projects and initiatives that meet four general criteria: 1) Is it a unique project that does not duplicate the work of another nonprofit? 2) Is it a unique project where we can make a real impact to a critical need? 3) Can the project be well executed, with the ability to report measurable reports and impact? 4) Does the private sector want to support the project of initiative? With this criteria in mind, we identify areas of critical need where we will be able to conduct a solutions-based program. A selection of our areas of focus includes: 1) Public Art & Culture (uplifting and beautifying communities) 2) Youth Sports (health/wellness, discipline, and engagement) 3) Youth Development (education, workforce prep, mental health, social engagement) 4) Homelessness (low barrier shelter safety and services, a safe and secure pet facility, and more) 5) Technology & Innovation (positioning Las Vegas as a global leader in innovation) With these initiatives in place, we work with our private sector partners, which include private foundations, corporate entities, and private industry grants, and assess their areas of interest in investment. Our model is to show the power of private/public partnerships, and gathering all parties together to combine resources to produce the best outcome. Some of our unique programs have included: Pet Facility at the Courtyard Homeless Resource Center: As the only low-barrier homeless facility in Southern Nevada, located in the Corridor of Hope, the Courtyard is also the only facility that will house the pets of the homeless, enabling them to access resources for themselves knowing that their cherished pets are safe and secure. We have provided the shelter with heating and cooling equipment, shade awnings for their turf area, supplies such as booties for hot pavement, food. and more. This year's campaign is to provide vet services, spay/neutering, microchipping, vaccinations, and more. Girls Street Hockey Clinics and Mindfulness Yoga Clinics: Founded by a grant from the Vegas Golden Knights, this program is conducted in the afterschool Safekey programs in low-income schools in West Las Vegas. The hockey component, held in the school gymnasiums, introduces the sport to girls, and the yoga sessions help to reduce stress, encourage calmness. increase confidence, teach discipline, and inspire general wellness. The yoga clinics in particular have been so popular that other schools are requesting them, and we are expanding the program. Build A Better Las Vegas Book Initiative: The City of Las Vegas Marshals have produced customized books that include images of the marshal department's cars, badge and shield. The books provide safety tips and carry the message that public safety officers are children's friends and protectors. The department, and sometimes the mayor or city councilmembers, host events in underserved schools focused on third graders, as they are reaching the age where they may be forming opinions about police and public safety representatives. The officers conduct book readings, sign each child's book with inspirational messages, and host other activities. The program enhances child literacy, promotes community, and encourages positive relationships with our protectors. We are beginning our second printing of 1,000 books that will include our participating private sector supporters. Strong Future Youth Workforce Program: Located in the Historic Westside, arguably one of the lowest-income communities in our region, this program focuses on helping youth from the ages of 16-24 prepare for the jobs of tomorrow. Computer and certification programs are offered, as well as the important essential skills and professional development that are critical to success in the workplace. Mentorship is offered, as well as paid internships in the industry of their interest.
