Mission Statement
Able Athletics empowers children with disabilities through tailored sports programming, while providing educational training for our volunteers in order to inspire a more inclusive future. We aim to bridge the significant gap in sports opportunities for youth of all abilities by fostering awareness and empathy amongst young people while educating them about the unique needs of our athletes, and what to expect during their interactions. To ensure success for everyone involved we provide on-site support from physical and occupational therapists, as well as professional coaches, who have worked together to develop comprehensive curriculums which promote a well-rounded and nurturing environment. Able Athletics strives to create a more accepting and inclusive society where everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive.
About This Cause
Able Athletics was founded by a family deeply motivated by their experiences with their youngest child, who has a rare neurodevelopmental disorder, which causes intellectual disability, physical disability, severe speech delay and autism. This personal journey led to the creation of an organization that is not only driven by a passion for inclusion, but is also distinctly representative of the community it serves. Founded in 2020, Able Lacrosse emerged from the vision of brothers Rowan and Christian Dias, inspired by their younger sister, Elle, to provide lacrosse access to individuals with rare disorders and developmental differences. What began as a heartfelt initiative by the siblings to share their love of the sport with Elle and her friends soon grew. With guidance from Elle's physical therapist, Dr. Erica Maiorano, and other special educators and service providers, the organization expanded to offer sports programming across Westchester County and Connecticut. It quickly became evident that the community had a strong need for inclusive sports opportunities. The Dias brothers sought further support, connecting with Scarsdale Varsity Lacrosse head coach James Synowiez. This collaboration sparked a movement to create volunteer opportunities for varsity athletes while simultaneously promoting education about inclusiveness, respect, and kindness. In response to the community's desire for a broader range of inclusive sports, Able Lacrosse transformed into Able Athletics in November 2022. Our core mission remains the same: to foster a more inclusive and understanding future.
