Mission Statement
The Math Cultural Center of Chicago (MC3) is on a thrilling mission to dazzle and inspire. Our goal is to infuse mathematics into popular culture, and to immerse visitors in a fascinating journey where art, history, technology, and real-world applications converge with the captivating world of math. We unveil the riveting stories that mathematics has authored throughout history, showcasing its pivotal role in shaping our society, and painting a vibrant picture of how boldly it will shape our future. Our motto, “Connections”, is at the heart of our mission - connecting people with math, through math, and further connecting us to corporations and cultural institutions, creating a tapestry of interwoven ideas and innovations. We aspire to reach everyone, regardless of age or mathematical expertise. The MC3 is a transformative journey where the world of math and culture collide, and where the ordinary becomes extraordinary through the lens of mathematics.
About This Cause
In today’s world, there is often a significant gap between public perception of mathematics and its true essence. This disconnect gives rise to tangible consequences, ranging from pervasive math-related anxiety resulting in underachievement to concerns regarding representation in areas of gender, race, and social backgrounds, at a time when analytical skills are becoming more critical than ever. Introducing Project MC3: a groundbreaking initiative designed to address this chasm and reignite a passion for mathematics within a wide range of communities, encompassing women, underrepresented minorities, and other groups who have historically endured exclusion from the realm of mathematics. Our goal is to infuse mathematics into popular culture, weaving it seamlessly into art, history, technology, and real-world applications. At its core, our purpose is to empower individuals to grasp the significance of the mathematics they encounter by immersing them in practical, real-world contexts. We aim to illuminate the pivotal role that mathematics has played and will continue to play in shaping the future of society, particularly in the context of the ever-evolving digital landscape and the rise of artificial intelligence. But we’re not just about education; we’re about inspiration. We want visitors to not only understand math but to experience its sheer joy, to feel the emotions it can evoke, and to have fun while learning. Our center will offer immersive and enjoyable experiences, making math accessible, relatable, and above all, exhilarating for everyone. And we’re not just targeting one age group – our mission is to work with individuals of all ages, from kids to parents, teachers, and curious minds alike. Our vision extends beyond the traditional classroom, aspiring to establish the world’s first-ever cultural center dedicated entirely to mathematics and its pivotal societal role, right here in the vibrant heart of Chicago. Supported by a consortium of 70 international advisors hailing from five countries, we are determined to bring the very best of our initiatives to this dynamic city. At the core of our mission, we aspire to do more than just connect people to math; one of our foremost priorities is to connect people through math. Our diverse array of weekly events, including shows, conferences, debates, concerts, interviews, and movies, offers visitors an exceptional opportunity to engage with inspirational figures who enthusiastically share their research and personal experiences intertwined with mathematics. We firmly believe that by connecting people through math, we can ignite passions and inspire vocations that will drive positive change. But our reach extends even further. We plan to connect the Center with Chicago’s thriving corporations through sponsorships and collaborative programs and exhibits, presenting the role of math across diverse industries. Furthermore, we plan to establish partnerships with existing cultural institutions for joint exhibits, exploring captivating themes such as the intersection of art and math, nature and math, space and math, health and math, and more. To bring this grand vision to life, we are honored to collaborate with the globally acclaimed architect, Jeanne Gang, and her esteemed studio, renowned for their mastery in fostering connectivity. Join us on this transformative journey to ignite inspiration, foster education, and cultivate bonds, creating a vibrant space where learning, fun, and collaboration flourish, with a special focus on those who have been historically underrepresented. Together, we’ll build a brighter, more inclusive mathematical future for all.
