Mission Statement
The Hollywood Committee is the only nonprofit organization created and led by TV & Film professionals dedicated to supporting our colleagues' drive to create entertaining content that tackles pressing issues such as mental health, democracy, and gun safety. Working with top experts in each field and providing access to people with personal stories on the issues, we're there for our members from script to screen.
About This Cause
For us, by us. We are writers, producers, directors, performers, tradesmen, and executives in the American TV & Film industry. Through our nonprofit, we aggregate and curate the resources productions need to tell deeper stories about our country's most pressing issues. Our challenge is to balance three elements of excellent storytelling: 1. Creative Freedom: Above all, we protect the freedom of our creative professionals to tell impactful stories that resonate with audiences. We know that didactic messages are disastrous when building an audience's trust but skillful and nuanced behavior change modeling that respects the viewer can change the world. 2. Social/Cultural Impact: We harness the power of storytelling to tackle important issues by crafting engaging narratives that spark conversation and avoid heavy-handed messages. 3. Industry Sustainability: We recognize that a healthy and profitable industry is essential to supporting storytelling for good. To achieve this balance, we focus on building resources. We connect TV & Film productions with the nation's leading experts and people with lived experiences. We translate their insights into practical, actionable advice that seamlessly integrates with the industry's workflow and language. We focus on issues that matter most to our members including: 1. Mental Health: Just as concerted effort is required in maintaining physical health, so it is with mental wellness. However, culturally rooted shame prevents many from accessing treatment. As a testament to the important work to be done, each of the US Surgeon General's 6 current priorities revolve around improving Americans' beliefs on mental health. We are dedicated to normalizing open conversation and challenging cultural stigma & isolation that often prevent individuals from seeking support. We are proud members of the Mental Health Storytelling Coalition, a group that partners major studios with the nation's premier mental health organizations. In the fall of 2024, we are launching a pilot program at the Brooklyn TV & Film Lab at LIU, where a cohort of emerging Black TV writers will learn to integrate mental wellness themes into their work. This program will equip students with the knowledge and skills to create impactful stories about mental health and well-being, fostering a more informed and resilient community. 2. Gun Safety: Guns are perhaps the most polarizing issue Americans face. But there is one bright spot that organizations and politicians across the spectrum agree upon: Firearms should be stored so that only the intended users have access. To reach this common goal, we model gun safety best practices in TV & Film. This includes encouraging depictions of safe storage in scripted storylines and addressing practical barriers like the low-portability of many gun safes due to weight. Our program builds out lightweight, maneuverable, and realistic prop versions of safe storage devices and lends them to prop houses and studios. They in turn, rent them for a modest fee (to recoup storage costs along with a small profit), to TV and Film productions across North America. The approach incentivizes prop houses and studios to keep safe storage options readily available for set dressing without the cost of a custom build. 3. Strengthening American Democracy: We promote pluralism, respect for diverse viewpoints, and model healthy interaction between communities that are often portrayed to be in conflict. Our programming follows the recommendations of the New Pluralists, and a September 2023 open letter co-authored by 13 US presidential libraries & foundations calling on all Americans to protect our fragile democracy. Every Hollywood Committee program is carefully designed to build upon areas of wide consensus and guided by evidence-based academic theories dedicated to understanding the intersection of behavior change modeling and entertainment.
