Mission Statement

For more than 60 years, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) has provided the spark for Oregon children to expand their horizons and discover their potential through science learning. Our far-reaching exhibits, programs, and events extend to communities across the Pacific Northwest. Our vision is to collaborate with partners to ignite an education transformation at the intersection of science, technology, and design, and weave a thriving innovation district into the fabric of Portland that spreads opportunities across the Northwest. As we prepare our students and citizens for the rapid economic, social, and educational changes of the 21st century, providing opportunities for hands-on learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is more important than ever. OMSI’s educational programs build crucial problem solving, creativity, and collaboration skills—keystones to preparing our children to thrive in a future we cannot imagine today.

About This Cause

OMSI opens minds and stimulates new ideas through innovative science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities across the Northwest. Regardless of age, or ability you only need to be curious to discover many pathways to learning. OMSI’s community programs take our educators into schools and rural locations in five western states. From searching for fossils in Central Oregon to exploring tide pools, OMSI’s outdoor science school, camps and classes, and traveling programs invite students, families, and adults to take part in science and technology through a wealth of hands-on experiences. Visitors to the museum can climb inside a NASA space capsule, build an aqueduct, program a robot, or experience an earthquake. In OMSI labs, visitors can create their own watershed, watch salmon develop from eggs to smolts, and learn how holograms are created in a series of interactive, hands-on areas. Special attractions such as the Kendall Planetarium, The Empirical Theater, and the USS Blueback submarine surround visitors with sights and sounds as they explore deep oceans, space, and the human imagination. Whether in or out of the museum, OMSI’s science education programs offer exciting pathways for exploration and imagination. OMSI serves over 1 million people per year at the museum and around the region.
