Mission Statement
Our mission is to inspire curiosity through engaging science learning experiences, foster experimentation and the exchange of ideas, and to stimulate informed action. We are committed to equipping everyone, no matter their background, lifestyle, or income level, with the skills and confidence to keep asking questions and to question the answers. OMSI is where all Oregonians gather, interact, and explore. As we prepare our students and citizens for the rapid economic, social, and educational changes of the 21st century, providing opportunities for hands-on learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is more important than ever. OMSI’s educational programs build crucial problem solving, creativity, and collaboration skills—keystones to preparing our children to thrive in a future we cannot imagine today.
About This Cause
The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) believes that by bringing diverse thinkers together to empower a scientifically-literate public, we will build a stronger Oregon. Founded in 1944, OMSI hones scientific thinking through exciting hands-on exhibits, labs, camps and classes, adult programming, professional development for educators, and learning centers in Fossil in eastern OR and Newport on the Pacific coast to leverage community-anchored resources across the region. We have a vision that OMSI, collaborating with partners, will ignite an education transformation at the intersection of science, technology and design that spreads opportunities across the Northwest. OMSI helps everyone discover their love for science. Without scientific thinkers, decisions can be uninformed, and fears — not facts — motivate actions. We empower a scientifically-literate society. OMSI helps explore the connections between the big wide world and our individual impact. We believe that solutions to the complex challenges of the 21st century will be developed based on data and evidence, through iteration, collaboration, and the open exchange of ideas. We build a stronger Oregon. OMSI is an important cultural anchor, not just for Portland, but for the state and region. Our traveling education programs reached 129,706 students and youth across the region, and In total, OMSI provided nearly $1,500,000 of financial access through direct aid and reduced admissions. Today, we offer 362 days of programming a year, camps, adult programming 6 nights a month, and professional development programs for educators who reach the youngest pre-school scientists to advanced PhD researchers.
