Mission Statement
Friendly House is a non-profit neighborhood center and social service agency in Portland, Oregon. We create a thriving community by connecting people of all ages and backgrounds through quality educational, recreational and other life-sustaining services.
About This Cause
Our programs are free or utilize a sliding fee scale so that they are affordable to everyone. Our current areas of focus are Children’s Programs, Community Recreation and Education, and Community Services. Children’s Program is the umbrella for all of our youth services. We have a playgroup for children until age three. Our preschool has a unique combination of Head Start and community enrollment for three to five year olds. For elementary school-aged children we offer After School and Summer Day Camp. Project Return is incorporated into After School and provides aid for students whose families are experiencing homelessness, or are at risk of homelessness, and are able to attend Friendly House free of charge in order to access resources that reduce the barriers they face. Community Recreation & Education gives community members the opportunity to exercise through use of our gym, fitness room, and classes. CRE offers lessons for all ages on topics such as Tai Chi, quilting, healthy cooking, water color painting, yoga for children, and more. Additionally, through our Lifelong Learning programming we offer lectures and trips that enrich participants’ lives mentally and socially. Every Friday evening at our Crawford facility is Community Night where we open our services to everyone free of charge—including use of the showers, Internet center, fitness room, and classes. Community Services provides support to low-income older adults who want to remain living independently as long as possible. Our SAGE Metro Portland program focuses on the needs of older LGBT adults. Programming for all older adults include: social opportunities, information and referral services, advocacy case management services.
