About This Cause

The mission of the World Affairs Council of Oregon is to broaden public awareness and understanding of international affairs and to engage Oregonians with the world. The Council's staff and programs work to serve as a community resource on international affairs, enhance international education in the schools, and sponsor international professional visitors. The World Affairs Council of Oregon offers over 40 public programs each year with experts and world leaders; hosts over 500 emerging leaders and entrepreneurs from around the globe and provides assistance to K-12 schools in their important work of teaching students to become citizens of the world. The World Affairs Council of Oregon is declaring 2014 the year of Women Changing the World. From public programs to teacher workshops, we’re bringing the message of women’s empowerment to our community. To kick things off, the Council’s International Speaker Series will bring four amazing women leaders from four corners of the globe to Portland. Through their respective efforts, each woman offers powerful insights and innovative solutions to some of the world’s greatest challenges and with them - her own definition of what it means to be a leader. {Visit www.worldoregon.org for details on the 2014 Series.} Here's a look at some of our other programs: International Speaker Series Since 2000, the Series has become widely recognized as the nation’s preeminent forum for the discussion of foreign affairs featuring esteemed world leaders. The inaugural year of the Series featured Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, Queen Noor, Robert Reich and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Speakers in subsequent years have included Ehud Barak, Madeleine Albright, Jane Goodall, Thomas Friedman, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and President Bill Clinton, to name a few. Programs on World Affairs Each year the Council presents over 50 public programs in which prominent scholars, diplomats, journalists, and other experts address the most important issues in world affairs. Our Monthly Headline Forum highlights topics of the day and recent speakers have included Hamid Al-Bayati, Ambassador of Iraq to the United Nations, General Wesley Clark, former Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and Robin Wright, U.S. Foreign Policy Correspondent for the Washington Post. Other programs include, the 8-week Great Decisions series on critical U.S. foreign policy issues, done in cooperation with Portland State University. Global Education Program The Council’s K-12 program provides resources to schools to enhance international education and multicultural awareness. Offerings include international speakers, a Cultural Immersion Program, Teach the World Educator Conference and the Global & Multicultural Resource Center which includes a lending library of Culture Boxes on over 90 countries. Culture Boxes help students experience the art, culture and daily life of other countries in a dynamic and interesting way with hands-on treasures from musical instruments, traditional clothes, toys, and games to easily transportable props. The Center also has an extensive re-source library on equity issues and on the United Nations. International Visitors Program Since 1950, the Council has provided professional training and business internships for hundreds of entrepreneurs and professionals. The International Visitor Program coordinates substantive professional development programs in Oregon for over 500 visitors from around the world each year. The Community Connections Program seeks to establish and strengthen links between U.S. Communities in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Young Professionals Program The Young Professionals (YPs) group of the World Affairs Council convenes young adults in their 20s–40s interested in learning about international issues, enhancing professional development skills, and networking with other young professionals through a variety of educational, cultural, and social events. Each month, the Young Professionals host one program and special membership rates are available.
