Mission Statement

Raphael House of Portland provides life-saving emergency shelter and ongoing support to families and individuals escaping domestic violence, while promoting nonviolent living through community outreach and education.

About This Cause

For 45 years Raphael House of Portland has helped domestic violence survivors and their families find safety, hope, and connection. We believe that everyone deserves a life free from abuse, and are here for survivors of every age, race, gender identity, faith, sexual orientation, income level, ability, immigration status, and national origin. Raphael House works with domestic violence survivors to recognize their own strengths in a safe and respectful environment. We provide resources, tools, and personalized support to help individuals and families reach their self-identified goals. In addition to immediate safety and basic needs, survivors have access to ongoing programs and case management designed to help them achieve permanent housing, employment, and self-sufficiency. In 2022 alone, Raphael House served more than 5,702 survivors and community members through our emergency shelter, ongoing services like virtual support groups and tenant education classes, workshops on equitable relationships and consent, 24/7 hotline, and housing assistance programs. Survivors across the community and 1,500 adults and children in our programs rely on Raphael House for shelter, housing, food and hygiene supplies, safety planning, and financial assistance. We’ve been able to continually support all these families, and are committed to ensuring that survivors stay safe, stable, and healthy. In addition to serving survivors of domestic violence, Raphael House also works to eliminate the causes of intimate partner violence through community education. We’re proud to have two full-time staff members devoted to prevention education, and a half-time educator focused on sex trafficking prevention. Raphael House now also provides confidential advocacy for students at three local high schools – supporting youth in the wake of dating violence, and helping young people develop healthy relationships. In total we reach more than 4,900 teens and adults in the Portland area annually by facilitating free trainings in schools, and with businesses and community groups. Community support is essential to our organization, and to the safety of the people we serve. Because only one third of our budget is funded by government-related contracts, each year we must raise more than $1,800,000 to ensure that our life-saving services stay available to survivors. Twenty-four hours of safety and wrap-around support for a survivor at Raphael House costs approximately $100. A donation of $2,500 funds our entire shelter for one day and provides 11 families in-need with housing, case management, food, clothing, transportation, support groups, and other essential services.
