Mission Statement
REACH creates opportunities for all people to thrive by developing and promoting equitable access to quality, affordable homes, supportive services, and community.
About This Cause
REACH provides much more than a safe, affordable place to live - we help our residents grow personally and professionally. As a nonprofit we rely on you, businesses, and foundations to support our housing and programs that enrich communities. Our Vision is to build communities where all people live in quality, affordable, sustainable homes -- empowered to achieve goals, and enjoying a strong sense of community. Founded in 1982 by a group of neighbors in response to the deteriorating neighborhood conditions in Southeast Portland, REACH was one of the first community development organizations in our service area. Today, REACH stewards over 2,700 affordable apartment homes across the Portland Metropolitan and SW Washington region. A diverse community of individuals, families with children, people with special needs or impacted by houselessness, and elders make their homes in a REACH community. We recognize that providing safe, affordable housing is not enough. Residents face financial and social barriers to maintaining housing stability. REACH works to build systems that support and enhance housing stability, prevent loss of housing, and create an environment that encourages people to engage in community activities and access health and wellness resources. Our focus includes: PROPERTY MANAGEMENT AND HOUSING DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: REACH has developed or preserved over 2,700 affordable rental apartment homes (units) permanently affordable to households with below-average income. REACH internally provides property management, maintenance, and asset management for its properties. RESIDENT SERVICES AND PROGRAM: REACH's Resident Services programs focus on addressing social determinants of health to help residents maintain housing stability, achieve greater financial independence, and improve health and quality of life. This includes financial education, matched savings program, employment services; providing information and referral services to connect residents to essential community and health services; life skills workshops; social engagements to build community; and establishing partnerships with other organizations. COMMUNITY BUILDERS PROGRAM: REACH provides free home repairs for low-income elderly and/or disabled homeowners to age in place and help maintain housing stability and build wealth. This includes providing accessibility and safety upgrades such as wheelchair ramps, grab bars, and smoke detectors. REACH serves approximately 200 households annually, engaging volunteers, donated materials, and contracted labor. At REACH we strive to live by our values. One of our core values is Integrity – That we are thoughtful, ethical and just in our work. Each one of us, regardless of our position, shares the responsibility for creating a positive environment, which begins with integrity and ethical behavior. REACH is dedicated to developing a culturally inclusive community and is taking a proactive approach in the type of development that meets the needs of a diverse population. We are working with our local partners to help inform that our developments meet the housing size, amenities, and safety considerations for Black, Indigenous, Immigrant, Refugee, and other people of color. Driven by feedback from focus groups, one-on-one interviews, and multilingual surveys, REACH is partnering with our development teams for meaningful and intentional community engagement leading with racial equity in developing new affordable apartment homes. At REACH, we are growing, innovating, and providing a critical service to our community. Thank you for being a partner in building a better, more inclusive community.
