Mission Statement

Classroom Law Project is a non-profit organization of individuals, educators, lawyers, and civic leaders building strong communities by teaching students to become active citizens.

About This Cause

High quality civic education dramatically influences what young people learn about democracy. It impacts whether they have the skills to participate in our political system, and whether they are inclined to do so in the first place. Our dedicated staff and talented volunteers provide the finest in civic and law-related education to schools across Oregon, from Baker to Brookings, from Pendleton to Portland. Democracy depends on the intelligence, energy and virtue of its citizens. Our programs cultivate these qualities. Civic education is at risk. Instruction time for civics is being reduced in schools across our state. With limited time and scarce resources, our teachers struggle to offer high quality civic and law-related curriculum. Classroom Law Project is here to help. We provide educators with the tools to teach the foundations of democracy and help students apply it to their lives. Our interactive, hands-on programs help students learn to develop rules, solve problems, and grapple with multiple viewpoints. They learn important life skills and gain a better sense of how political processes actually work. The 26,000+ students who participate in our programs every year come to see themselves as valued and needed members of the political community. They are likely to be more civically engaged, now and in the future. This means more effective business owners and machine operators, anthropologists and artists, politicians and parents. And, as we help to create good citizens, our communities become stronger. For more than three decades we have asked for Oregonians' commitment and generosity to help us grow our high quality programs. Every year Oregonians have responded with enthusiasm. We now rely 100% on our community - individual donors, volunteers, parents, alumni, businesses, corporations and foundations - to keep Classroom Law Project going strong. We believe that high quality civic education should be available to students and teachers in every school in Oregon. Our wonderful supporters help us get closer to that goal. This work is not just important, it is imperative. Together we are advancing the future of democracy, one classroom at a time.
