Mission Statement
The mission of Greater Than (GT) is to support and empower students from poverty-impacted communities to thrive in school, college and career. Working alongside parents, community partners and local school districts, Greater Than seeks to transform public education outcomes in Oregon for historically underserved students. We view every aspect of our work through the lens of racial equity, which guides our decision-making, relationships, policies, and practices. Our work is built on three pillars: education, community, and equity. Our programs aim to advance a racially just future for learning because equitable education is a right. We are intent on moving from a system of holding power over community to holding power with community. We are committed to racial equity and the restructuring of systems that create inequities for marginalized individuals.
About This Cause
Greater Than (GT) exists to level the playing field and provide students and families the opportunity to shape their own future and end intergenerational poverty. Working alongside parents, community partners and local school districts, GT seeks to transform public education outcomes in Oregon for historically underserved students. In 2010, Greater Than started the whole child/whole school intervention model based at Alder Elementary School in the Reynolds School District located in the Rockwood community of east Portland. This collective impact model engages schools, nonprofits, and other partners in supporting student and family-led efforts to achieve educational equity and reduce racial disparities. Through this collective partnering we work to amplify the often silenced or ignored voices in our community. GT serves students (800+) and families (530) in the Rockwood community. Rockwood is one of the most culturally and racially diverse neighborhoods of Multnomah County, a vibrant community poised for city reinvestment to address the unmet needs of families who call Rockwood home. Of the students we currently serve, 68% are English Language Learners; 85% are students of color; many are bi-lingual, with 26 languages spoken in their homes, and 95% qualify for free/reduced price lunch. We regularly gather feedback from families which is incorporated in organizational decision making. We ensure accountability internally through our Impact Team, which elevates community-voice in program design and delivery. The pandemic has provided an opportunity to come together in a time of crisis, building trust and strengthening relationships with many of the families we serve. Our whole child/whole school Impact Model is the vehicle by which we pursue our mission and goals. Through evidence-based research, we engage in intervention strategies which includes Parent Engagement, Racial Equity, Program Development and Partnerships, and Post-secondary Success guided by Impact and Evaluation. The model is geared towards our long-term goals that 100% of students achieve high school graduation and 80% achieve post-secondary completion (e.g. trade school, certificate, degree).
