About This Cause
Organization Background The Northwest Wheelchair Tennis Association (NWTA) was established over 25 years ago. We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. Our mission is to further the development of wheelchair tennis and to promote an active and healthy lifestyle for children, youth and adults with disabilities. Our goal is to create a supportive environment and community for junior and adult wheelchair tennis players through recreational and competitive play with other wheelchair tennis players, family members and friends. We provide coaching and court time as well as access to equipment including tennis rackets, tennis balls and sports chairs. We educate the public about people with disabilities while promoting a better understanding and awareness of wheelchair tennis in our community. We mentor junior players and adult players with the goal of promoting their self-esteem and personal confidence as well as developing in them a love for the game of wheelchair tennis in order for them to become life-long participants in the sport. Currently, NWTA has 14 juniors and eight adults actively involved in our wheelchair tennis program. Our programs serve Oregon and southwest Washington. In 2013, we served over 120 participants in our activities and events. Current Programs and Accomplishments NWTA’s current program consists of tennis instruction and coaching twice weekly as the schedule permits; a session offered on Saturday for juniors, beginner and intermediate players and a session offered on Monday for intermediate and advanced players. Our Saturday lessons are instructed by Debbie Borchers, a tennis professional who has over 25 years of experience coaching wheelchair tennis for NWTA. Debbie is usually the first point of contact for juniors and adults as they enter our program. She serves as a board member, helps in fundraising and running our annual tournament, and manages other program needs. The Monday sessions are instructed by John Devorss, a USTA wheelchair tennis coach. For the past three years, John has coached weekly sessions with a more advanced focus on competitive play. Both Debbie and John are available for private instruction and coaching for wheelchair tennis players striving to advance their skills beyond the weekly coaching sessions. 2014 will mark our 26th Anniversary of the Pacific Northwest Sectional Wheelchair Tennis Championships. This tournament is one of the longest running United States Tennis Association and International Tennis Federation sanctioned events in the world. Participants from as far away as Japan, France, Turkey, South America, throughout Canada and the United States have competed in this event. Our tournament is organized and run completely by volunteers. NWTA Staff NWTA is a completely volunteer-based organization with no paid staff. NWTA currently has a total of 45 volunteers who assist with adult lessons, junior camps, our annual tournament and other tasks necessary to sustain our programming and organization. Through the efforts of a core group of dedicated and skilled volunteers, NWTA is experiencing significant growth in community outreach and fundraising. Our video project, website and social media presence, tournament and camp event planning, grant writing, and business-related tasks are all managed by volunteers who are creating a bright future for the growth of our organization. There are six board members including President, Vice President, Treasurer, Co-Secretaries and one regular board member. NWTA also has a three person parent advisory board. NWTA Collaborations/Relationships In Oregon and southwest Washington, NWTA is the only organization providing year-round wheelchair tennis programming.
