About This Cause
CoHo Productions broadens perspectives and cultivates empathy through vibrant and intimate theatrical productions. CoHo nurtures and supports Portland area-based theatre artists through a model of theatrical co-production, championing exceptional local artists who share their passionate work with an engaged audience, deepening the theatrical landscape of the community. For 20 years, CoHo Productions has pioneered artist-led co-production as a model of creating theatre. Each season, CoHo solicits scripts and project proposals from Portland’s theatre professionals and selects three to produce in partnership. The artistic vision is democratic, reflecting the tastes of the Portland theatre community. Seasons are diverse and unpredictable; the sole quality nurtured and insisted on is excellence. The result of these remarkable services to the community deepens Portland’s artistic talent and increases theatrical opportunities. CoHo co-produced the initial productions for the now distinguished Third Rail Repertory and Profile Theatre companies. CoHo provides many local playwrights their initial viewings (including an original musical) and CoHo Productions regularly receives awards for Outstanding Productions, Directors and Actors. A locally embedded non-profit pushing the boundaries of theatrical storytelling in Portland for over 20 years, CoHo Productions strives to create the opportunity and space for artists and projects that fall outside the dominant, white and male discourse. CoHo’s unique co-production model puts submitting artists in leadership positions driving the execution of their own projects, and CoHo’s dedication to selecting a diverse and gender balanced season of co-producers each year consistently places women, people of color and under represented playwrights, actors, directors and co-producers in positions of power and artistic self-determination. CoHo’s mission is driven by the belief that giving voice to a broad range of performers representing diverse training, aesthetics, ethnicity, age ranges, gender identities and economic status is fundamental in eliciting broader cultural and structural change. CoHo Productions strives to include and support participation by women, minorities and other underrepresented groups in every level of its operations including all hiring practices, choice of plays and selection of projects and co-producers for the season.
