Mission Statement

At Kinship House, we address the missing piece in services provided to most children touched by foster care and adoption. In addition to significant mental health concerns, these children have been traumatized by a necessary but difficult system. They need to explore the circumstances of their past to prepare for a successful future. Our work helps minimize transitions and increases the chances of children settling into a stable, healthy and permanent home. Kinship House outpatient child and family services combine ongoing consultation, therapy and education. In addition to treating each child’s mental health issues, we help families develop secure attachments. We know secure attachments to caring adults will help stabilize the child’s mental health. We provide family therapy and consultation to help parents develop the skills to support their child’s unique needs.

About This Cause

Support for new beginnings and healthy families. Our mission is to champion the successful permanency of each child who comes to our door. We understand that each individual’s unique history, culture, and needs must be considered as they journey to stable, healthy homes. According to one report on the state of foster care in the US, Oregon has been rated number 49th in the country. In the 2015 Oregon Data Book, there were over 11,000 kids in our foster care system with about a third of those kids living in the Tri-County area. • Children in the court system can move from foster home to foster home an average of 4 to 6 times. Some children will move more than 15 times. • Children spend an average of 28 months in the foster care system. • 42% will drop out of high school. • 63 times more likely to be incarcerated. • 1 in 5 will be homeless • There are approximately 3000 children in foster care in the tri-County area • Multnomah County has one of the worst ratings for foster care placement stability - ranked 25 out of 36 counties in the state of Oregon Our purpose at Kinship House is to address the missing piece in services provided to children touched by foster care and adoption. In addition to therapeutic services to address significant mental health concerns, we help children move beyond the trauma caused by their experience in the necessary but difficult foster care system. Our work helps minimize transitions and increases the chances of children settling into a stable, healthy and permanent home. We believe that in addition to therapy for individual mental health issues, children need support to heal from the circumstances that bring them into the foster care system and from the emotional instability created by the system. Our children need to explore the circumstances of their past to prepare for a successful future. We work together to provide family therapy and consultation to help parents develop skills to support their child’s unique needs and to help families develop secure attachments which will help stabilize the child’s mental health. • A variety of therapy is used: drama, play, art, and talk. • Adults who care for the children are involved in therapy.
