About This Cause

American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) is an international nonprofit founded in 1990 to provide for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle. We help find forever homes for those in good health. We offer permanent sanctuary to abandoned and lost tortoises too ill or deformed to be rehomed. ATR has saved and re-homed more than 4,000 turtles and tortoises since it was founded. Take a tour of the rescue here. We are also members in good standing of the American Sanctuary Association. Our house and the turtle hospital in Malibu burned down Friday, November 10, during one of California’s most devastating wild fires. With last minute evacuation orders, we loaded both cars with animals, including all of the undersized and ill, as well as our seven special needs box turtles from the turtle hospital. We left our possessions behind. Bunkle, our mascot, also rode out with us. The rest sheltered in place in fireproof housing as planned. The fire descended on the rescue taking out fencing, trash cans, plants, trees, anything it could attack. Thankfully, Tank, Poppy, Evil, Fluffy and more than 90 % of all the turtles and tortoises survived, including two rescued roosters. They were shell shocked as you can imagine from the sights and sounds they experienced as the fire raged through and the winds blew at more than 50 mph. But they survived the meteor that destroyed the dinosaurs, so we know they will survive and thrive. Replacing the turtle hospital and all of its contents is a major expense, as will the renovation and upgrade of the entire sanctuary that took such a beating when the fire storm went through. Please share widely with all your turtle loving friends. And follow us on Facebook at American Tortoise Rescue, as we will have frequent updates. Stay tuned and pray for us as we recover and rebuild #turtlestrong Problems we treat range from dog bites, amputations, upper respiratory infections, shell rot, starvation, stress, failure to thrive, run over by cars, parasites, worms, predator attacks and other medical problems like liver and kidney diseases. Many of the conditions are caused by owners or ignorant individuals. Some are cruelty cases. Because turtles are not warm and fuzzy, they are often way down on the list for donations, yet veterinary bills. food and housing are very expensive. Donations are gratefully accepted. To make a donation or for more information, contact ATR online at www.tortoise.com or email us at info@tortoise.com. Follow us at Facebook and on twitter @tortoiserescue. In the year 2000, American Tortoise Rescue launched World Turtle Day, celebrated every year on May 23rd. Its purpose is to educate the world’s peoples about why saving turtles and tortoises from extinction is critical. This observance is now celebrated in virtually every country in the world.
