Celebrating Autism, Changing Perceptions, Creating Community
About This Cause
KindTree is dedicated to serving and celebrating the Autism Community through Art, Education, Recreation and Community. Founded in 1997 by two group home workers determined to remedy their clients’ lack of meaningful activities, KindTree-Autism Rocks provides support, services, and information to empower and improve the quality of life for individuals and families living with autism, and the professionals who serve them. From its inception, this “grass roots” volunteer - oriented nonprofit has maintained its focus on serving and celebrating people on the autism spectrum through art, education, recreation, and community. In the past twenty two years, KindTree-Autism Rocks has grown from offering an overnight retreat in the Oregon forest for six adults to becoming a successful 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a 2,000+ distribution list, hundreds of student and community volunteers, a skill training curriculum serving dozens of students, and an art program representing dozens artists. KindTree-Autism Rocks serves many more individuals through various community recreation programs, social media, support groups, and provides real social events/activities where everyone can feel safe and be themselves. Autism Rocks Friends and Family Camp: KindTree “Autism Rocks” annual end-of-summer family-oriented weekend event at Baker Boy Scout Camp, 150 acres of mixed conifer forest situated on Siltoos Lake, 6 miles south of Florence, Oregon. A weekend of fun, relaxation, networking, swimming, music, theater, arts and crafts, noncompetitive sports, karaoke and theater. Serving 160 guests and 100 volunteers. Our flagship event since 1997. Art Program: KindTree displays and promotes visual art created by people with autism, generating income and creating opportunities for them; building awareness of individuals’ autistic talent by means of our annual juried Autism Artism shows and subsequent displays in galleries, at restaurants, public buildings, agencies, schools, and other locations. STiLE Program: “Skill Trainings for an Independent Living Experience” in a respectful group-learning environment, trainings include cooking healthful food, relationship building, personal empowerment, jewelry making, exercise, socialization, art and music, and work readiness. The online Every Friday Social gathering provides an opportunity for people 16-up on the autism spectrum, family members and caregivers an opportunity to network, make friends and build community with like-minded people. Advocacy Program for Adults on the Spectrum: Peer Support Group in Eugene, Social Skills Class and peer-planned activities, and frequent meetings of the Artist Guild. These programs are conceived by and for people with high-functioning autism and Aspergers who can converse with others in a group setting. Regulars and new arrivals ranging from 19 to 70 years old share stories and discuss different challenges posed by living with autism. Autists make friends and influence people. Community Outreach and Education: We communicate to the community via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram weekly, encouraging conversation and sharing successes, opportunities, information and news. Our eFLASH bulletin goes out monthly with updates about events, volunteer opportunities, and other important health news.
