Mission Statement
Western Rivers Conservancy’s motto is Sometimes to save a river, you have to buy it. WRC purchases land along the West’s finest rivers and streams to conserve fish and wildlife habitat, protect key sources of cold water and create public access for all to enjoy. Its approach to river conservation is effective, tangible and permanent.
About This Cause
Nearly three decades ago, Western Rivers Conservancy set out to protect the finest remaining rivers in the West. The idea was simple: Buy land along rivers and convey it to the best long-term steward available, delivering permanent protection and public access for all. These efforts have paid off. Over the past 34 years WRC has conserved over 190,000 acres along more than 200 rivers in nine states. Today, WRC’s projects include some of the most important conservation efforts in the West: The 47,000-acre Blue Creek Salmon Sanctuary and Yurok Tribal Community Forest on California’s Klamath River; creation of the Hoh River Recreation and Conservation along 20 miles of the Hoh between Olympic National Park and the Pacific Ocean; conserving 42,261 acres along 29 miles of Oregon’s Wild and Scenic John Day River; and permanent public access delivered to Montana’s famed Three Dollar Bridge site on the Madison River, to name just a few. WRC works across the American West to ensure a future of healthy rivers, where fish and wildlife can thrive and people can enjoy the benefits and beauty of clean, functioning streams. Project partners include the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, state parks, Native American tribes, counties and public universities—long-term stewards that ensure WRC’s conservation results are permanent. While WRC projects vary widely in size and scale, they all have one thing in common: impact. When WRC sets out to buy and permanently conserve riverlands, the efforts deliver an outsized benefit to the river, and to the fish, wildlife and people that depend on it.
