Mission Statement

Krymov Lab NYC is a pioneering hybrid organization, serving as a theater company, an experimental laboratory, and a training center under the visionary leadership of world-renowned director Dmitry Krymov. Founded in 2022, the Lab emerged from Krymov’s storied artistic career in Russia and the urgency of exile, becoming a vital force in New York’s theater scene. Our mission is to enrich New York theater life for both theatergoers and creators by introducing Krymov’s distinctive theatrical style, which intricately intertwines classic texts, evocative visual design, personal histories, inventive stagecraft, and music. These elements come together to form immersive experiences that are at once provocative, challenging, joyful, and inspiring. At the heart of Krymov Lab is a bold disruption of traditional theater power structures. We empower both emerging and established artists to take risks, creating ambitious works—unique objects, characters, and moments—that push the boundaries of theater. Through our innovative creative processes, we confront the complexities of contemporary life, developing a new theatrical language that invites audiences to see the world through a sharper, more profound lens. In sharing our productions, we aim to cultivate our audiences as collaborators in the creative process. By engaging them deeply, we foster a lasting connection that invites them to return, time and again, to witness and participate in our ongoing exploration of art and life. "There is nothing else like this on New York stages." — The New York Times

About This Cause

Following the Lab’s inaugural triumphant debut in New York, we invite you to support Krymov’s vision for the future. In 2022, Dmitry Krymov left Russia in protest, just a day after the country began its war against Ukraine, to make his home and work in the United States. We have assembled a team of top-notch American producers, actors, and designers who believe in the power of his work. Many of them were Krymov’s students at Yale and The New School. We have incorporated and registered as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization to best serve our team, supporters, and community. As a Resident Company of La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, we are fortunate to have the excellent support of their team. Dmitry Krymov creates theater like no other. He built an artistic home in Russia to incubate rich, impactful theater that captivated audiences worldwide. Krymov was consistently recognized as one of Russia’s leading theater directors, and his Lab in Moscow was one of its most cherished companies until his vocal opposition to the war in Ukraine prompted officials to strip him of his awards and shut down his productions. In the fall of 2023, we presented Big Trip, a repertory of two pieces (Three Love Stories Near the Railroad, adapted from two Hemingway short stories, and an excerpt from Eugene O’Neill and Pushkin “Eugene Onegin” In Our Own Words), at La MaMa to great acclaim. Adapted from Russian and American literature, these pieces introduced an eager New York audience to Krymov’s hyper-visual, whimsical, and arresting style. Both pieces thrilled and touched audiences and critics alike. The productions received tens of positive reviews. The New Yorker published a lengthy profile on Krymov and the Lab (https://www.newyorker.com/culture/persons-of-interest/a-russian-theatre-director-in-exile), as did The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/07/theater/dmitry-krymov-russia-ukraine-director.html). The entire repertory run sold out within days of tickets becoming available. Onegin, in particular, proved so popular that we sold out a three-week remount at the Under The Radar Festival just a few months later. We are deeply grateful to everyone who made our first steps possible, and we hope that more people who love genuinely independent and groundbreaking theater will step up to help us leap even further. We invite you to join us in building the Lab into a stable home for Krymov and his masterful theater in New York City. His work's nature could change the general direction of American theater.
