Mission Statement
Promote the health and well-being of individuals with disabilities in outdoor recreation through participation and certification in adaptive scuba diving and providing access to education and resources to help participants navigate the complexities of accessible travel in the US and abroad.
About This Cause
JBAS Adaptive Scuba Diving Program is a three-phase program designed to introduce, teach and promote exploration of the vast underwater environment locally as well as across the world. As individuals with disabilities learn to dive through the adaptive dive program, family members will be encouraged and supported in their own efforts to become certified to dive alongside divers. The scuba diving community across the globe is large and diverse and provides a lifetime of outdoor recreation experiences. Participants will be invited to attend Try Scuba events held either at the North American Divers training pool in Lindon, Utah or at a local Rec Center. We have partnered with Provo Recreation Center to hold periodic events in the therapy pool at that facility. Provo Rec Center charges a minimal use fee for events at their facility. Try Scuba events are free to participants and require no additional commitment. All participants in Try Scuba events will be accompanied in the water by a minimum of two trained Diveheart Adaptive Scuba Instructors/Dive Buddies. Diveheart professionals undergo rigorous training to prepare them to teach and/or assist adaptive divers in the water. A portion of the funding received supports hard costs, materials and equipment related to certification of additional Diveheart Adaptive Dive Buddies to ensure adequate supervision of divers at all times in the water. Following introduction to diving at a Try Scuba event, participants interested in completing Diveheart Adaptive Diver certification will proceed with a full assessment including Diveheart Adaptive Diver Registry, Diveheart Scuba Needs Assessment and a standard financial needs assessment. Participants will be asked to commit to some portion of the financial cost of a Diveheart Adaptive Diver certification based on their ability to pay. Equipment rental, instructor fees, facility use fees and materials costs for an adaptive diver certification vary, but average approximately $1200 per diver. We believe even a small financial commitment to the program promotes ongoing participation and completion of certification. However, inability to pay the entire cost should not preclude participation. The balance of the cost of certification for our divers will be covered by grant funding, individual sponsorship, donation of time by instructors and other charitable donations on a case-by-case basis. Following pool and academic learning portions of the Diveheart Adaptive Diver certification, participants engage in open water training sessions to prepare them for diving in ocean or other open water scenarios. As in the pool, each adaptive diver participates in open water diving scenarios in teams including a minimum of two Diveheart trained professionals. Open water training sessions are conducted locally at the Homestead Crater in Midway, Utah. We have partnered with The Homestead Crater to establish protocols that will be safe and effective for our divers. Following completion of certification, we provide access to adaptive scuba trips worldwide, as well as support for individuals and families looking to travel and dive privately. Oversight and data collection for reporting to funding sources including UCORE will be maintained by collective effort of executive committee including applicant, Robin Knight. Data collected will include participation numbers, volunteer hours, cumulative hours spent in scuba diving training and activities, and percentage of participants who plan or engage in scuba diving outside of the training program within a year of certification. Reporting will also include photography and videography representing program activities.
