About This Cause

Headquartered in Portland, OR, VOICES events are about Validating our diverse experiences, Owning our own narratives, Inspiring each other, Challenging stereotypes, Empowering ourselves, and Shaping how we and others understand adoption. VOICES believes in partnership, collaboration, and solidarity. Being rooted in community, we maximize our impact, pool resources, and collectively address the needs of our community. We strive to remove barriers and to ensure our events are accessible. We keep event registration free or low-cost and provide ASL interpretation, accessible venues, and other accommodations to support diverse needs. We prioritize the safety and well-being of our diverse BIPOC adoptee community. THE WORK WE DO ● Storytelling events to provide a formal platform to share our stories, experiences, and emotions related to adoption. We believe storytelling is a powerful tool for healing, self-expression, and understanding. ● Panel presentations to feature BIPOC Adoptees and adoptee experts who share their unique experiences, insights, and knowledge on various topics related to adoption. ● Social mixers to offer opportunities for connection and to foster a sense of community and belonging. ● Community experiences to celebrate our diverse cultural backgrounds and identities, such as cultural showcases, arts and crafts, food tastings, and other immersive activities. We are not a monolith! ● Multi-day conferences focused on adoptee-centered programming, empowerment, and advocacy to bring together BIPOC Adoptees, professionals, and community members to address pressing issues, share resources, and collaborate on projects that benefit the adoptee community. ● Educational workshops to address our unique experiences. Topics covered may include identity development and expression, mental health and wellness, and relationships. ● Resource sharing to gather and disseminate resources relevant to our community. www.bipocadoptees.com | bipocadoptees@gmail.com | 503-710-8822 Connect us on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok @bipocadoptees THE NEED Most BIPOC adoptees grow up isolated from BIPOC community, and many of us don’t realize how many of us there are, let alone know how to find each other. Our organization solves this problem by creating interventions for a community that is not seen as needing interventions. Our event participants consistently report feeling less alone, feeling safe, seen, heard, and validated. Adoption trauma has a life-long impact and can be compounded by adoptive family violence, feelings of exclusion, isolation, lack of racial mirrors, bullying, white supremacy. Adopted people have immensely higher rates of mental health issues like anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addiction, institutionalization, and suicidality. We believe our work is a mental health intervention.
