Mission Statement

House Our Neighbors Education Fund envisions a future where all people can afford to live and thrive in vibrant, cohesive, and climate resilient communities. To achieve this, we educate the public on social housing and advocate for policy to realize social housing for the residents of Seattle and beyond.

About This Cause

Social housing is an internationally proven model that provides permanently affordable, publicly owned, majority tenant-governed housing to mixed-income residents. Due to the mixed-income nature, cross-subsidization of rents allows for social housing to operate without the continuous government subsidies required for traditional low-income housing. It treats housing as a public good, not a commodity to make a profit off of. The Seattle Social Housing Developer was established in 2023 by the I-135 ballot initiative led by the then House Our Neighbors coalition. HONEF's priorities in 2024-2025 are to expand its social housing education beyond Seattle, and start taking the movement to other Western Washington communities. We continue to partner with technical experts such as architects and housing developers to create visuals and financial models of how social housing can be implemented. In addition, we will conduct policy research and development that will help create an ecosystem in Washington for social housing to flourish.
