Mission Statement

MAMA is a grassroots movement of parents and allies is fighting back against media addiction and creating a world where real-life experiences and interactions remain at the heart of a healthy childhood.

About This Cause

At MAMA, we recognize screen addiction and the absence of safeguards have fostered an unhealthy, unsafe media environment for children, contributing to the national youth mental health crisis. The average teen now spends five hours a day on social media, which correlates with a precipitous rise in levels of depression and anxiety among young people. Over the last 10 years, teen reports of depressive episodes have increased by 250%, and we’ve seen a 188% increase in emergency room visits for self-harm in teen girls ages 10-14. MAMA envisions a world where safeguards protect children and teens from the harms of media addiction, and children can grow up free from hidden algorithms that exploit their emotions for profit. Our work focuses on providing communities with parent education, advocating for phone-free schools and technology safeguards, and building a coalition of advocates to insist tech is safeguarded like most other consumer products.
