Mission Statement
You’re Seen is a holistic, strengths-based program designed to empower marginalized youth in King County, with a particular focus on underserved communities in South Seattle and South King County, including immigrants and youth of color. The name “You’re Seen” reflects the program’s core belief that every young person deserves to feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving success despite their circumstances. By leveraging the art and historic significance of cosmetology, combined with skill-building and family engagement, the program fosters resilience and lays the foundation for long-term success.
About This Cause
Youre Seen (YS) is a holistic program dedicated to empowering marginalized youth in King County through the transformative art of cosmetology, fostering education, healing, and self-expression. Built on the principle that “when you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you do good,” YS uses cosmetology as a tool to build confidence, resilience, and celebrate cultural identity. YSBYB (You’re Seen, Be Your Best) equips youth with technical skills in hair care, nails, skincare, and barbering, while addressing systemic barriers to ensure Black and Brown youth can navigate licensing processes in a culturally congruent manner. For many who face multiple levels of discrimination, YS bridges gaps and breaks barriers, providing access to opportunities often out of reach. The program extends its impact by preparing youth to become community advocates through peer-to-peer services rooted in the Ubuntu principle, which emphasizes interconnectedness and mutual care. This aspect of the program focuses on Healing Centered Engagement, helping participants address behavioral challenges, advocate against bullying, and support one another as agents of change. By connecting technical skills with social impact, YS creates dual pathways for personal growth and community transformation. Leadership Rooted in Lived Experience Turner Yarbrough, YS’s Executive Director, brings lived experience and passion to the program. Growing up in Seattle, Turner was inspired by his mother’s belief in the power of beauty to boost self-esteem and transform lives. As a teenager experiencing homelessness and family instability, Turner found purpose through hairstyling, learning to braid and master advanced styles despite significant challenges. His journey from couch surfing to becoming a skilled hairstylist epitomizes the resilience and transformation YS seeks to inspire in its participants. Under Turner’s leadership as a Washington State Certified Peer Counselor and Healing Centered Engagement Practitioner, YS ensures that its approach remains culturally congruent, authentic, and impactful in breaking barriers for youth facing similar struggles. Prioritizing Mental Health and Wellness Mental health and wellness are integral to YS. Recognizing the significant stressors faced by marginalized youth, the program provides culturally relevant counseling, workshops, and wellness activities tailored to the experiences of Black, Brown, immigrant, refugee, and homeless youth. These services build emotional resilience, teach coping strategies, and create safe spaces where participants can process their emotions and reconnect with their identities. Healing Centered Engagement is central to YS’s innovative trauma-informed approach, focusing on cultural and community-based practices to empower youth and families to heal and thrive. The program integrates mindfulness exercises, stress-reduction techniques, and peer group discussions to build emotional strength and foster a supportive community. Family workshops further reinforce these efforts, equipping caregivers with tools to create stable and nurturing environments. Comprehensive and Transformative Impact YS’s strengths-based model integrates cosmetology, mental health support, peer advocacy, and family engagement to provide a transformative experience for youth. By addressing systemic barriers, fostering cultural pride, and equipping participants with marketable skills, YS helps marginalized youth envision and achieve brighter futures. This comprehensive approach not only empowers individuals but also creates ripple effects that strengthen families and communities, ensuring a lasting impact. YS stands as a testament to the power of combining technical education, mental health support, and community advocacy to foster resilience, pride, and success among youth.
