About This Cause

Fred Finch Youth & Family Services (Fred Finch) is a 501(c)3 tax exempt non-profit organization that provides innovative, effective, caring mental health and social services to children, young adults, and their families that allows them to build on their strengths, overcome challenges, and live healthy and productive lives. We serve children, adolescents, young adults, and families facing complex life challenges. Many have experienced trauma and abuse; live at or below the poverty line; have been institutionalized or incarcerated; have a family member that has been involved in the criminal justice system; have a history of substance abuse; or have experienced discrimination or stigma. We have the experience and cultural competency to serve individuals from all ethnic, age, and gender groups effectively. Our team is representative of and enjoys working with the communities in which we live. Fred Finch Youth & Family Services offers unconditional care, support and opportunity to children, youth, young adults, and their families who face complex challenges from one or more of the following: mental or emotional impairment; developmental disability; trauma and abuse, some at a very young age; alcohol or other drug use; poverty; exclusion; discrimination and stigma. Because each person has different needs and needs change over time, services are available in several configurations and many locations including residential treatment, public school, non-public school, homes, community settings, specialized independent and shared housing. All mental health, educational and social services are professional, culturally competent, innovative, individualized and based on the strengths, hopes and aspirations of each person and family. The goal is always to support the individual and family on their journey to a healthy, satisfying, productive life in the community. For a legacy to stand the test of time, it is essential to define one’s values. At Fred Finch, our work is driven by these core values: Respect – To create trust Family – To sustain throughout life Compassion – To connect one life to another Persistence – To stay the course, no matter what Safety – To build a secure foundation Hope – To invent a brighter future At Fred Finch Youth & Family Services, these values are not just what we say, but what we do. You can see it in every program. Our staff is compassionate and committed, resourceful with your donations, innovative in our solutions. We work with young people to overcome multiple and simultaneous challenges, including homelessness, economic disadvantage, mental health and cognitive disabilities, and histories of significant trauma and loss. According to the US Department of Health and Human services, about 422,000 children currently living in California suffer from a serious mental health condition. Additionally, the Public Policy Institute of California estimates that, in 2007, child poverty rates among Latinos was 23.6% and 28.5% among African Americans. There are currently over 56,000 California children in the foster care system, and, between 2009 and 2011, infants entered foster care at a rate three times that of any other age group. While we serve children from all over California, during 2011 alone, and in just the six counties in which we have service facilities, there were nearly 10,000 reported and substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect. Each day we work with young people that have endured nightmares most of us can’t even imagine. Where some agencies find it nearly impossible to make a difference with this population, we go boldly forward. At Fred Finch, we are committed to the notion that no one is without hope, no matter how desperate their circumstances may appear. We offer hope, provide relief, and develop a pathway to a new and brighter future. …And still, we must do more.
