Mission Statement

Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin Counties is one of the most effective job creators and environmental organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. We provide job placement and training services helping the chronically unemployed get back to work. In the past 12 months, more than 600 people -- formerly homeless, formerly incarcerated, formerly in the grip of addiction, or displaced from other countries - got jobs through Goodwill. By helping people who are ready to change their lives migrate from being on public assistance to earning a paycheck and becoming self sufficient, we have an outsized impact on our community. More than 80% of the funding for our job services comes from selling goods generously donated to us by residents of our three counties. Through this activity, we divert more than 21 million pounds from local landfills, helping us achieve zero waste. Read our Success stories at: https://sfgoodwill.org/mission/success-stories/

About This Cause

For almost 100 years as a standalone nonprofit social enterprise, Goodwill of San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin Counties has offered a second chance to men and women ready to transform their lives through the power of work. Of the over 600 people who got jobs through us in the past 12 months, one third came to work at Goodwill, learning through our retail training and warehouse & logistics academies. We hire the people we serve; more than half of the people who work at our Goodwill today are current or former recipients of our services. After rebuilding their skills at Goodwill many flow out into jobs in related industries as truck drivers, forklift operators, hospitality, retail and other service industries. The economic impact of our job placements puts $53 million into our local economy. Goodwill SF also plays a big role in the local drive to reduce landfill waste to zero. By re-selling, repurposing, and recycling the goods we receive, we are helping the City of San Francisco maintain its C-40 status and reach its zero waste by 2020 goal. Our new SFGoodwill goBINtm initiative, for instance, will put tech-enabled donation bins in major apartment and office buildings to make donating textiles more convenient and put a stop to the more than 4,500 pounds of textiles flowing into local landfills every hour of every day. Goodwill can turn those unwanted textiles into jobs and job opportunities for people in desperate need.
