About This Cause

Hiring for Mission At Saint Mary’s College this means hiring diverse faculty and staff who will commit to deepening their understanding of its Liberal Arts, Catholic, and Lasallian heritage and will contribute to its mission. Included in that diversity are faculty and staff who especially identify with the Catholic and Lasallian identity of the College (President's Statement 2012). Saint Mary’s College is committed to four critical areas for strengthening the “Hiring for Mission and Values” process. Employment Outreach Employing a consistent, proactive recruitment strategy, using liberal arts, Catholic, Lasallian, and diversity networks is essential to find a pool of candidates that will be both good for the institution and good for the individual. Searching broadly and aggressively for individuals who will seek engagement with the SMC community and wish to contribute to its mission and core values will strengthen the College. Candidate Mission Education Engaging candidates early in the hiring process in learning about our mission and core values are important for building community. First, candidates will acknowledge reading the mission statement; second, they will be asked to respond to how they meet the job qualifications and how they will support the mission; and third, during their finalist campus interview, they will contribute to the mission. Community Involvement in Hiring for Mission Developing the capacity of search committees and hiring managers to probe mission and values through appropriate questioning will strengthen the hiring process. Providing hiring managers and community members a resource guide with FAQ’s and recommended questions will encourage dialogue about mission. Mission Education Commitment Providing “Early career” mission education options, during the first 6-12 months, will ensure that staff and faculty have opportunities to develop a deeper commitment to furthering a vibrant inclusive community where social justice is practiced and individuals are respected
