Mission Statement
The philosophy of Sausalito Nursery School is to provide a quality educational program for young children. The students enjoy the best of both worlds: parent participation and professional guidance by a full teaching staff. As a parent cooperative, SNS affords parents and children the opportunity to participate together in the excitement and joy of the first years of learning. We believe education is best served when teachers, parents, children and families work together. We strive to provide a secure, comfortable and responsive environment. We respect, accept and appreciate each child. We encourage each child's independence and autonomy. Sausalito Nursery School maintains an environment free of racial, religious or sex role bias, stereotypes or prejudice.
About This Cause
Sausalito Nursery School is one of the oldest cooperative nursery schools in the country. Founded in 1939 as a WPA project known as the Sausalito Pre-School Play Center, the school has provided an exceptional start to generations of children in Sausalito and Southern Marin. Turned over to the community in 1942, it functioned as a low-tuition supervised playgroup until 1947 when the school was incorporated as a non-profit cooperative. Sausalito Nursery School enhances the social, intellectual, physical and emotional development of each child according tot he natural patterns of children. SNS believes children learn through play. The structure within our program is created to instill a love of learning that will follow a child through the rest of his/her life by allowing children to have a positive self-image; feel confident and safe; have the opportunity to initiate play and exploration; and become comfortable with familiar routines. The professional staff, aided by co-oping parents, is responsible for planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate curriculum for each age level. There are three programs available: a 2 day program for two years olds; a 3 day program for three year olds and a 5 day Pre-K program for 4 year olds. With the assistance of the co-oping parents a ratio from one adult to three to six children is maintained. The school operates from September through mid June, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Extended care is available for additional fees. We have our own special Sausalito Nursery School song which has been sung for generations. The last line in the song is "Be friends, be happy is the rule at Sausalito Nursery School"!
