Mission Statement

The mission of Legal Services of Northern California is to provide quality legal services to empower the poor to identify and defeat the causes and effects of poverty within our community efficiently utilizing all available resources.

About This Cause

Since 1956 Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC) has provided quality legal services that empower the poor to identify and defeat the causes and effects of poverty. Can you envision a community in which everyone has enough to eat? A community where every family has a safe place to live, and health care is available to all? That is our vision for all the communities in California. It is why every one of our offices cultivate advocates who care about people. Legal Services of Northern California serves 23 counties in Northern California with nine office locations located in Sacramento, Auburn, Chico, Eureka, Grass Valley, Redding, Ukiah, Vallejo and Woodland. We also have the following special programs: Senior Legal Services Programs, Senior Legal Hotline (serving all of California), Tommy Clinkenbeard Legal Clinic (serving the homeless population in Sacramento), Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), Eviction Defense Project (EDP) and Expanded Access Project (EAP). LSNC’s substantive priorities are: Support for Families (e.g. child care, child support, child welfare, troubled youth) Preservation of Housing (e.g. creation and/or preservation of low-income housing, tenants rights, evictions and lock outs, foreclosures, quality of housing, mobile homes, mitigation of homelessness, termination of utilities, unsafe housing, natural disasters) Enhancing Economic Stability (e.g. unemployment benefits, wage claims, wrongful termination, discrimination, job training and placement, education for adults and children, preventing job loss, driver’s license reinstatement, debt collection defense, obtaining and preserving necessary public benefits, job creation, consumer rights, community economic development) Family Safety and Stability (e.g. preservation of the health and safety of the family, home and community, family law, domestic violence, simple wills and probate) Health Care (e.g. access to health care, community participation in health planning, hospital services, Medi-Cal/ Medicaid, dental care, long-term care/nursing homes, cost of health care) Civil Rights (e.g. discrimination against poor people, people of color, women, children, persons with disabilities, elderly and limited English-speaking persons, access to courts, right to counsel, self representation, defense in civil actions and Native American issues) The organization has a multi-dimensional service delivery system which employs the efficiencies of telephone hotlines, self-help advocacy through counseling, clinics, pro se materials, and community legal education, in addition to direct representation both in court and at administrative hearings. LSNC engages in creative collaborations with other legal services programs, community organizations, and government agencies, including court-based in pro per assistance.
