Mission Statement

Legal Aid's mission is to fight social injustice through civil legal advocacy for people living in poverty.

About This Cause

Founded by a visionary group of San Mateo County attorneys and community leaders in 1959, the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County is a vital lifeline to equal justice for low income people in our community who otherwise would be deprived of essential legal services. Standing firmly upon our five pillars of service to the disadvantaged; Obtaining Health Care, Preventing Homelessness, Accessing Income Support Programs, Fighting for Freedom from Domestic Violence, and Bridging the Education Gap, we are dedicated to ensuring that all of San Mateo County’s residents are afforded equal access to our system of justice regardless of their income, age, gender, language, or disability. In 2016 we opened more than 2000 cases, impactinging 6200 low income children, seniors, families, and individuals threatened with domestic violence, homelessness, loss of income, elder abuse, and inadequate public educational opportunities for their children. As an exemplary 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County pursues development strategies that maximize funding from federal, state, local and municipal governments, private foundations, leading corporations and from committed individual donors. We are staffed by 25 employees, including 13 staff attorneys, and are presided over by our 18 member Board of Directors. Our $2.5 million annual budget is augmented by over 13,000 volunteer hours of pro bono legal services we receive annually.
