To provide Chinese language and cultural education to youngsters throughout the Bay Area. To provide after-school and weekend language programs (in both Mandarin and Cantonese) in order to enable youngsters to speak the Chinese language. To educate students on the Chinese culture (history, music, dancing, customs) and promote the traditions of the Chinese community. To provide a safe environment for youth to participate in sports activities, as well as a wellness program to help prepare the youth to deal with their everyday life challenges.

About This Cause

The Shoong Family Chinese Cultural Center has been a vital community center developing Bay Area youth for over the past 70 years. Started in 1953 by the Oakland Chinatown community, the Center has educated thousands of youngsters through the years. The Center currently has over 25 different language classes (from K - 9th Grade) that provide after-school and weekend education to youngsters aged from 5 to 18. The Center also provides a dancing and sports program that promotes physical health and exercise for youngsters. The Center charges a nominal fee for its language programs, but has operated mainly through donations from individuals and organizations through the years. The Center does not receive any ongoing funding from the federal or local governments. Sports and Mentorship: We provide organized sports and equity play activities to over 500 youth each week, including dance, youth basketball, and badminton. Our no-cost basketball program features league play with the East Bay Cardinals for high school and young adults. Running for nearly 40 years, it stands out for competitive tournaments, community-building, and serving a diverse group of players from Tibetan, Vietnamese, Yemeni, Chinese, Laotian, and Cambodian backgrounds. Seasoned players mentor youth, focusing on discipline and life skills. Education and Wellness: This Chinese literacy program fosters cultural understanding and heritage preservation through an inclusive, academically rigorous curriculum. This year, we are integrating culturally competent, bilingual wellness classes on mental health, confidence, decision-making and communication. We serve participants from diverse ethnic backgrounds, and offer classes at low cost. Our goal is to provide education opportunities to as many youth as possible so we maintain the fees at a drastically reduced rate.
