Mission Statement

Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

About This Cause

It starts with a Little. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area transforms the lives of children facing adversity by helping them succeed and thrive. Our mission is to help children reach their potential through one-to-one relationships with impactful mentors. It is our vision that successful mentoring relationships can be achieved for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities. The Greater Sacramento Area agency serves Sacramento, Yolo, and South Placer counties, in which there are over 250 children annually who benefit from the guidance of a trusted and caring mentor. Children are more likely to succeed if they avoid interactions with the juvenile justice system, violence, drugs and alcohol. Bigs leave a lasting impact on the lives of their Little, and help shape who they grow up to be. A recent survey of former Littles revealed that the life-changing effects of a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor lasts far beyond the scope of childhood. Your generosity pairs a child with a caring mentor, who is a consistent source of guidance and support. You make an incredible difference by providing funding needed for professional, trained staff to carefully screen volunteers and match them in long-term, safe mentoring relationships. Bigs commit a minimum of one year to building a relationship with their Little, and visit their Little at least 4 to 8 hours a month. Time together can be as simple as throwing a football or having a conversation. These little moments impact both the child and volunteer in a bigger way than ever imaginable. Mentors engage in activities that enhance the child’s abilities and personal assets, increase his or her knowledge of the community, and build self confidence. Within each relationship, the child and volunteer mentor build a friendship and trust that encourages and supports the child, allowing him or her to safely try new things, develop decision-making skills, experience success in social situations, and to model behavior after the mentor. Through his or her new-found skills and successes, children feel better about themselves and typically begin to make positive decisions rather than engaging in those activities that could lead to risky behaviors. Ongoing staff-led training and routine check-ins with volunteers, children and families helps create matches that are built to last. This agency management ensures that matches remain fulfilling for each volunteer and child, so that each Little can reach his or her highest potential. Your support provides local children with the empowerment that only Big Brothers Big Sisters provides. With your help, we can give every child a chance to achieve a bright future.
